From Reagan's speech the same day:

"The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God."

You have them mixed up, Regan made this speech for the Jan 28, 1986 crash of the Challenger during takeoff. The Columbia crash during re-entry happened 17 years and 4 days later on Feb 1, 2003.

Both crews are as COG said "Heroes!"

Hah! That's just the government's cover story!

The real truth is that, on the way down, they collided with a "chem trail" created by the Department of Defense. It disintegrated their shuttle.

I can't remember which Astronaut said it, but I had heard the statement that NASA belived that every Shuttle Mission had a 1-75 chance of having a castastophic event that would result in the loss of the vehicle and the deaths of the crew.

Regardless whether they were a mission specialist, or a trained fighter pilot, the people that went up in that thing had a certain confidence, and courage, that does define the word hero.
