Default Police Arrest Hippie... Hippie Decides to Protect and Serve Us All

This is funny. I like this guy!

From the article:

January 1, 2012: Austin police forcefully harm a woman during a traffic stop. A long haired hippie looking guy takes pictures of their abuse. Long hair dude gets arrested and they make him take a breathalyzer.

Turns out long hair hippie dude is actually Antonio Buehler, an education professional who was a 100% sober designated driver.

Turns out he was correct in thinking he had the legal right to photograph the police in a public place. It's been upheld as a First Amendment right by a little thing called the Supreme Court.

Whoops.

Oh yeah, turns out the "hippie" is also a West Point graduate, an Iraq and Kosovo veteran and former officer as well as a Stanford grad.

Whoops.

Hippie dude decided to fight the police in court. He also worked with local activists to start the Peaceful Streets Project which leads a small army of volunteers who film the police in action on a regular basis and spread information about police abuses. He received notice of the National Press Photographers Association and others.

Whoops.

In other words, he's become a bad cop's worst nightmare.

Moral of the story: police, do the right thing please. Leave good people alone and do your job. Stop bad officers who harm your name. The next person they wrongfully harass might be another Antonio Buehler. Citizens, remember it's not the fighting overseas which "keeps us free" it's fighting for our rights here. Those who do so are the real heroes.

Speaking of which, the acknowledged leader of the "Keep Austin Weird" counterculture movement, passed away last March. Anyone who has had anything to do with Austin over the past 2 or 3 decades knew who Leslie Cochran was.

Love him or hate him, it is safe to say that Austin will never be the same without Leslie Cochran!

There are good ones and bad ones and if the good ones are not ratting out the bad ones then they are no better than the bad.

Besides the quote about Leslie coming in 2nd in an Austin Mayoral election ...

... that just about sums it up for Austin.

AKA the BMer, suspenders, bean sprout eating, silicon Valley reject crowd.

I try to remain inconspicuous when I travel to and from Austin these days, so my "foot print" won't even been noticeable, and you are most welcome to "my share" ...

.. having spent some quality time up there in my past ... in the past 30 years or so I have always been reluctant to invite any ladies I meet there home, for fear that after getting historically acquainted I might discover she is actually my daughter!

I do remember many nights traveling listening to the Austin City Council "citizen night" agenda on NPR ... and the quandry of the "salamander" found in Barton's Creek above the pool ... put the brakes on some poor developer who was cranking a $200 a day interest nut while the UT groupies investigated the "environmental impact" the golf courses would have on "the salamander" ... it was months it seemed like ... a real soap opera ... with real people ...

.... real money ... and ... real sad.
