I'd go to Microcenter. They have a really good selection. You don't need a lot of features. Just get something in the 3-500 dollar range and it will do everything you need.
What broke on yours? is the battery just dead? They also have batteries for a lot of laptops there.

Ya, Hard drives aren't too bad in cost. If the windows serial number is on the bottom of the laptop the OS can be downloaded and reinstalled using that number. Probably would be about 60-100 bucks to fix if that's the case.

I agree good place to go. I'd stay away from used. New ones there start under 300.

Have you ever had a "used" laptop?
Just curious since you said you would stay away from them..

I haven't but I would be weary of used because of the portability of a laptop. You never know how many times it has been dropped or kicked around. I am sure there are some good used ones out there but for the cost I'd rather buy a new one with a little warranty.

Is there a BestBuy in your city? They have Google Chromebook for $199.
I don't know the details of your area but where I live the Arabs have started opening up used computer stores in the hood. Maybe you could see if your town has an Arab computer store. I bought my from them 2yrs ago for $175 and haven't had any issues since (unlike my $700 Toshiba that fucked up in under 6 months).

I would actually prefer a google nexus tablet over a chrome book. Its a little more flexible app wise with the tablet over the chrome book.

Well, I would add a couple of things just for clarity. The Google Chromebook is a laptop that runs the Google Chrome operating system, not Windows. If you are hoping to run a Windows application, you are S.O.L. with the Chromebook. It's basically just an OS that runs a web browser. That is it. I wouldn't recommend a Chromebook for anyone. Perhaps in a few years... Google Chrome is also a web browser that runs in Windows and other operating systems.
If you are looking for something cheap that runs a web browser and lots of other apps, I would definitely recommend the Nexus tablet like Royamcr suggested. That's a great little tablet that I use a ton that runs on Android (which has over 700,000 apps available now, equal to the iPad). If you have any questions, hmu.

i will probably just get a new one and stay away from used ones or going on craigslist. i dont know a lot about computers and im scared someone will trick me into getting one that doesnt really work lol. was really thinking about a tablet or ipad (although i dont really know the difference). but the way my living room at my house is set up, i cant use a desktop. and i always use my laptop on my lap and i know thats bad because it needs the air.. so i was thinking maybe an ipad or something like that would be best for me

You can run some apps on a chrome book so you aren't totally sol. Just not nearly as many as android.

Yes I have, I repair them and most used ones at the super stores still have the original or refurbished drives. Most have little warranty. Heat is the death of all laptops and you never know what kind of care they have had. I also recommend you purchase a cooling pad for one. They have built in fans to keep your laptop cool.
