People come out and say it so it becomes inundated into modern society which makes it seem more familiar and more of a norm. This creates more of an acceptance.
There was an experiment which in a newspaper they posted gibberish meaning words with varying frequency and later had a poll about those words in which ones they "liked" the most.
The ones with the highest frequency always won and there was almost perfect correlation with the like of the word and the frequency.
So therefore doing this(announcing their preference) is just a way of injecting themselves naturally into society.
But I understand your opinion, it seems rather accepted now and at times can feel like an in your face look at me type of thing. Namely I am special and different wee look at me. Coming out nowadays isn't nearly as "brave" of a thing as it was 15-20 years ago.
(dependent on familial circumstances of course)
But sexual preference is genetic so it is akin to saying "Hey I have brown hair!"
Oh well to each their own!
Okay I'm done
