It very well could. Book rooms now, if possible. Houston is the fourth largest city in the country. Even a tiny percentage coming up here to get away from the storm will fill up every room available.

I would verify she has either a permanent incall or a room booked now

I have Hilton and Marriott points and I was looking on their websites:

rooms here that were $97 or 10,000 points per night are now almost $130-150 and 30,000-50,000 points per night depending on geographical location in DFW and that's just for a 1 or 2 bed little room in Hampton Inn, a Hilton brand.

Same rooms at Hampton Inns in Houston that were $75 or 10,000 points per night are now $150 or 60,000 points if you can find one.

Most hotels and motels regardless of brands in Houston and surrounding areas are pretty much booked solid: I looked on Hotels.com, Expedia, Hilton, Marriott, Orbitz, etc

I find it interesting that hotels, as an industry standard, seem to be able to get away with price gouging. They do it for events, conventions, 'high season' for tourism, etc.

It's shitty but legal?

I'm visiting from Vegas and I haven't had trouble with rooms, very reasonably prices and plenty available.

It's legal when they do it for those events.

It's illegal when they do it in areas that have been declared disaster areas by either the Governor or by the Federal government.

The rest of the time they can charge whatever high room fees they want and get away with it.

A Best Western hotel lost their franchise and national corporation support today after they were caught charging triple to quadruple the normal rate.

I emailed the OAG of Texas and this is their reply:

Quote:
The law provides that it is a false, misleading or deceptive act or practice to take advantage of a disaster declared by the Governor under Chapter 418 of the Government code, by: 1.) selling or leasing fuel, food, medicine or another necessity at an exorbitant or excessive price; or 2.) demanding an exorbitant or excessive price in connection with the sale or lease of fuel, food, medicine or another necessity. You may reference these links, http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.u...htm/GV.418.htm https://texasattorneygeneral.gov/cpd/price-gouging http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.u...C.17.htm#17.46 for more information regarding price gouging. Violators could face penalties of $20,000 per incident. If victims are age 65 and older, the penalty is more than 10 times higher — up to $250,000.

The issues will be
We are not in a disaster area so does that apply?
What is excessive ?
If its the same rates they change for peak times and special events, they will probably get away with it.

Now is great time to make some money on airbnb, if you're able to do so.

DFW is not one of the 30 counties in Texas declared as a disaster area.

If hotels and motels want to raise their rates by double, I think they can get away with it especially when there is pretty much always some major even going on in DFW every week.

But anything over that will be considered gouging.

I booked a hotel room back in June and it was the same week Neil Diamond (was it Neil Diamond?) and someone else having a concert in DFW and the prices were double for the few remaining rooms available.
