Yes 1/2 million ppl feared to be gone, and its so heartbreaking the images. Some of the biggest immediate health threats include respiratory disease from inhaling dust from collapsed buildings and diarrhea from drinking contaminated water. Haiti's quake refugees likely will face an increased risk of dengue fever, malaria and measles. In addition to no food or water as they face the task of retrieving bodies. i have sent a donation to the red cross and hope others will as well to help in this time of desperation.

The national Text 2HELP Initiative is a partnership between the American Red Cross and The Wireless Foundation that allows customers of participating wireless carriers to send a text message to the Red Cross and make a donation to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. It's always refreshing to me to hear what big hearts some of our providers have and how they want to help people in suffering.

I also heard former President Clinton, who is Haiti now and talking today on NPR about the magnitude of this disaster and they won't be able to even properly gauge the extent of the catastrophe until all the bodies have been found.

There is panic, looting and triage and it is unbelievable that such a poor country would be hit so hard!

Haiti Earthquake Children in Emergency

News Update
WESTPORT, Conn. (Jan. 13, 2010) — Save the Children has launched an emergency relief effort to assist children and families in Haiti in the aftermath of a major 7.0-magnitude earthquake near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Read latest press release.

The agency, with offices in Port-au-Prince, is sending teams out this morning by motorbike in Port-au-Prince and is flying in additional staff to help support the emergency response.

As it has done in recent disasters in Haiti, Save the Children is preparing to provide immediate lifesaving assistance, such as food, water, shelter and child-friendly spaces. It has verified the safety of all but 16 staff members in its main office.

Save the Children has worked in Haiti since 1985, primarily in the capital city of Port-au-Prince and the Central Plateau region, providing health, education, protection and food security programs to vulnerable children.

Our gov't has pledged basically whatever is needed. Unfortunately the corruption in gov't, ours and theirs, will minimize the help that actually gets to the people that need it.
Many people will not give because they feel that they have given through taxes. I'm sure $10 to the Red Cross will do more good than $1000 from the US gov't.

I know there are charlatans abound. It’s is especially sad they prey on people that have lost so much or are compassionate enough to try to help. I give to three reputable charities monthly off of my credit card. The Red Cross is one of them. They do wonderful work for people that are in such need and have suffered so much.
