You need a toy that's both firm and flexible. Doc Johnson has a line called Dual Density. Toys in that line have a fairly firm core with a softer exterior. I've got the John Holmes toy from that line and I can go balls deep with it quite easily.

I used to have the Dick Rambone dildo....I think it's 16 inches. I could go balls deep on that one too, but due to it being very rigid (it wasn't a Dual Density toy) it wasn't always easy getting it in completely. I ended up throwing it away.

Practice, practice, practice. I've seen vids where women are taking unbelieveable large objects in their assholes....

We'll...there's no bulging going on for me. But I can say without a doubt, just as crashkopf noted, practice is the key. Start with what you can handle and slowly increase from there. Keep in mind there's another sphincter up inside, maybe 6-8 inches depending on your height.

That's most likely where you're getting stuck. Don't force it though. When you hit that spot push a little, then back off. Keep doing this and eventually you'll get through. There's a sharp turn to the left after that. That's why a flexible dildo works best. Anything too rigid might hurt at that bend.
