All of those men that went into that hot hell hole in an attempt to secure the facility received "the Order of Lenin" for their sacrifice.

That and 400 Rubles will get you a cup of coffee at the Moscow Starbuskys.

Watched the first two episodes. Too many bad English actors trying to act Russian.

Amazed how the Soviet State had so many people hoodwinked to deny reality. Then again the alternative reality was the barrel of a gun or being pushed out of a helicopter.

The USSR wasn't socialism, it was pure totalitarian communism.

In truth, a pure "Thugocracy".

Just like Bernie and AOC want here.

Sure, it wouldn't start that way. But that's the way it would end up.

i watched the first few episodes, mainly detailing the disaster. of course they are airing it directly after GOT so that makes for at least some audience bleed-over.

the main reasons the disaster happened is that the reactor's design was "obtained" by Russian operatives, and it was a British prototype that the British never put into production because they soon learned the design had serious flaws. Like reverse engineering several B-29s including their engine flaws (unlike the B-17 which was the finest bomber in the world at the beginning of WWII the B-29 had to be rushed into service without normal testing lead time) the Russians implemented the flawed design then kept them going decades after the British had dropped it. (The design was tested in the 1950's by the British) and of course their typical Russian fuckup response of "All is well, stay calm!" didn't help much.

had the Russians responded better they might have been able to regain control. once it began a runaway meltdown the explosions that resulted doomed the whole thing. i'm not sure at that point anyone could have contained it quickly.

i may keep HBO or not, now that GOT is over. they will re-broadcast for awhile, possibly even begin the entire series over as a weekly show. they'd get viewers for sure.

other than GOT the lineup for this month at least doesn't impress me. one movie that stands out .. "Crazy Rich Asians". this is movie only a woman could drag me to a theater to see. and only because you don't piss off your pussy (unless you don't want that pussy anymore or you are stupid) this movie is so stereotypical it is laughable. if non-Asians had written and produced it the media would have called for their heads. instead they hailed it as some breakthrough of cultural diversity. i found it a comedy rather than a romantic movie.

The Chernobyl reactor was a liquid sodium reactor. Sodium is corrosive. We did build one, realized our mistake, and went back to pressurized water. Of course, we retrofitted the one before there was a disaster.

which means the accident was completely preventable. since the Russians stole the original design why didn't they notice that both the British and US had long ago discovered the flaw?
as you noted we changed the cooling design, the British just moved on to a newer design.
why did the Russians keep the known flawed design in production when they could have fixed the problem?

Good book on the Chernobyl thing... listened to it driving around. Serious heroes and serious villains in that tale.

Watched episodes 3&4 last night. I didn't think the Russians had that many pets. The amount of "stupid bravery" exhibited by the Russians is incredible likely fueled by a lifetime of shaping by the Politburo. I haven't been moved much by the depictions of radioactive poisoning of the 1940s Japanese; last night was different.

Good show. This week, National Geographic ran a mini-series called The Hot Zone about the Ebola outbreak in Reston, VA back in 1989. It's worth watching, but it's not near as good as Chernobyl.

Saw both Chernobyl and The Hot Zone. Both were good but I thought Chernobyl was better. Probably because it gave me the goosebumps.

Seriously? I didn't know there was an ebola outbreak in the US before the one a couple of years ago. Surprised the CDC never brought it up. Well, not really.

They already know they are dead. A bullet is better than black lung.
