Check out the Saiga-12; have several and they are great weapons.

Well 590 would be my highest recommendation , especially the one with the bayonet lug. Since they are close combat weapons, something like that will add a little to the length but make up for it during reloading, or when your gun fight turns into a melee in a house or something, and it has an intimidation factor that might keep an opponent from charging you. Also might come in handy if you want to prod something and not blow a hole in it.

Remington 870 is a long outstanding workhorse.

There is a variety of off brand shotguns some made to have interchangeable parts with mossbergs and remingtons . shot guns aren't really high precision machines , pretty hard to screw up and make bad one
unless they are setting on a shelf for 40 bucks, heaps of cheap used ones are available for about the same cost as a typical eccie escorts half hour rates.

20 gauge shotguns are nothng to sneer at either.

I have a Remington 870 for home defense. Great gun and very dependable.

For an HD shotgun I wouldn't trust my life with a saiga 12. I've shot a couple and they were very finicky with ammo. I'd keep it simple and find a nice mossberg 500 or Remington 870 with the shorter 18.5" barrel.

But I would buy a saiga 12 to shoot for fun. 12gauge mag dumps are pretty fun.

When new they don't like low brass. If you do some clean up work on the bolt and locking lugs they will run anything. Personally i would go with a rem 870 or mos 500 for home defense.
