If you like a good steak try Bohanans. I like the Texas Salad and a good NY Strip but if you want get fancy they do waygu and lobster. Nice bar. Best if you have someone take you out there, can get expensive if you are having drinks. Not a party spot more a date place or unwind treat.
If you want to take a drive and enjoy wine there are a number of vineyards between SA and Austin. If you are into that kind of thing.

While a Fred's Fish Fry family order can go a long way, you may want to specify what sort of fun you are into and looking for, so that you may get some more taylored suggestions.

Fave spot for a beer, Friendly Spot, Southtown.
Best burger, Zinc Bistro, Texas Monthly put it at one of the best in Texas, has a good wine list too, and a great happy hour. Inexpensive as hell.
Thai food- Thai Dee, little badass hole in the wall that allows BYOB at no extra $.
Drinks? Paramour, beautiful view and cool staff. Also TBA, Rumble, lots of others.
With a few great exceptions, food downtown is YMMV. Plenty of places that are fantastic around town tho.
I agree with the Wildfish comment.

for fish I would say red snapper paesano [dish] at Paesano's in The Quarry. They dont serve it at their place on 1604 and I avoid downtown when possible.

The answer really depends on how long you will be here. I would suggest downtown because you have the alamo and riverwalk + tons of restaurants and bars all within like walking distance.
And since you'll be downtown try Mi Tierra Cafe and Schilo's Delicatessen.

If you want steak, the Josephine Street which is in the Pearl area (a short uber ride from downtown), then you can walk around the Pearl area as well.

Good luck.
