Bus Monitor Receives Hundreds of Thousands
A video has gone viral on the internet that shows an old woman being victimized by children on a bus; the link was posted on this site two days ago. I heard, on Glenn Beck's radio program this morning, that $460,000 has been donated, as of this morning, to the victim by people who saw the video. Glenn said the money is still pouring in. She should be a millionaire in a few days.
This is a happy ending story that helps to restore faith in humanity. It shows that we humans are capable of terrible cruelty but we are also capable of great kindness.
From theblaze.com:
Yesterday, you first learned about Karen Huff Klein, the 68-year-old bus monitor who was assaulted, harassed and bullied incessantly by middle school students in Greece, New York. The incident — captured on video that is almost too unbearable to watch — is making waves across America. But in the wake of the tragic tale, ironically, an inspiration story is taking form, as caring individuals from across the Internet have raised more than $120,000 for Klein.

Ten minutes of being bullied and in return, several million dollars. I'd sign up for that gig. For another half million, I'd even take a beating. I love stories about people that are essentially down and out one day, and rich the next. This story reminds me of the homeless guy with the "golden voice" who got a job as an announcer for Kraft Foods. It's also similar to Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent who went from obscurity to wealth and fame overnight. People love stories like this. Not to get too deep, but this story is the stuff of fairy tales; it's archetypal. It's a variation on the Cinderella story.

the real question is, what next?
i mean how do you give these monitors any power and what consequences can there be to these brats actions.
i know that a school bus is a mass of incoherent bedlam as is a school hallway these days.
exactly what is a monitor supposed to do and what power and support will they get?
slapping the kids into line would only get them arrested and sued
so what is the point of a monitor?

I think there is an assumption that the presense of an adult will cause children to behave themselves because they've been taught to respect authority figures. A bus monitor, with no real authority, might have been an effective way to insure that children behave themselves years ago, but not anymore. These kids are basically savages, that victimize anyone they think is unable to defend themselves.
It's not uncommon for teachers to be cursed at and even assaulted by their students in the inner cities. The school bus monitor incident is a sympton of a wider problem.

Or maybe stuff like this always happened, but we just didn't hear about it until every bus got stocked with 15 camera phones.

Agreed there is a camera everywhere now.
When I watched that video I couldn't help but think "who the hell are these kids parents, and have they not taught their kids anything in the way of decency, compassion, kindness, and manners?"
Yes this is a sad fact now that parents these days are severely lacking in good parenting skills. Either that or parents now a days are extremely apathetic and look the other way when their kids do things like this.
The world is mean and it just gets meaner.

Do we all really think kids weren't like this when we were young?
Heck, one of those kids will very likely turn into the next Mitt Romney.

Come to think of it, half a million dollars might be low for that kind of job.

I want to see the alternative ending to that video, the one where pulls a Glock 9mm out of her purse, and goes all Dirty Harry on them!
