Default The best...

Gates...hands down the best in KC. Then youve got Jackstack, or the original Arthur Bryants down off 18th st.

OK Joes might be tough for a Texas gal but it is the best, even though it is north of the Red River.

Rosedale on Southwest Blvd. The best there is. Oklahoma Joe's is good. But Rosedale's is great.

Gates? That has to be a joke. Not even OK; maybe so-so, if you don't know Bar-B-Q one may fall for the hype. But this is not the real stuff. I have literally gotten sick from the overbearing sweetness in the sauce.

Authur Bryant's is a political hat tip to the old time Democrat people. A dirty dive. The sauce is terrible. Tastes like they put wood ashes in it. Gritty.

Hayward's Pit Barbecue in Overland Park has a long history of very good food. A little pricey. All the items are good, and a good sauce.

Wyondotte is a do not waste you time.

Jack Stack (Florella's) is a nice business that pretends to be Bar-B-Q. A lot of hype and I take business clients there. I pass it up when I want some good food for me. The one downtown by Union Station is much better than the really bad food at 96th and Medcalf; Overland Park, KS.

Winslow's was sold several years ago (River Market) is is still good (kinda) but not what it was.

Zarda Bar-B-Q; there are several places: Always a good serving - but not the best.

Quick's Bar-B-Q (The hide out sleeper) at 1007 Merriam Lane; Kansas City, Kansas. A great little place that you would not suspect is one of the great places in greater Kansas City. It is near Rosedale's, and I have been going to Rosedale's for over 40 years. Quick's just doesn't advertise: it doesn't need to.

There are some other small places that do a really great job but are unknown to the general public. Slow wood cooking is the secret.

Oklahoma Joe's is where white suburban types like to go. Don't get me wrong, the food is legit! But most folks think it's cool because it's in a gas station. All that really means is there's no parking and no place to sit down. Jack's Stack is also honkeyville, but it doesn't pretend not to be. Hands down they have the best sides and some really good, high-end stuff like their BBQ Prime Rib at $35 a plate.

If you want authentic KC 'cue, then you need to hit up Bryant's, Gate's or LC's. Bryant's sauce is the closest thing we have to Texas flavor. They give you a lot of meat, and it's usually good. But JR's right, it's a dump! LC's is sweeter and has good meat, but it's an even filthier dive.

You might want to try Smokin' Guns, Woodyard or Rosedale. You can never go wrong there. Quick's is definitely good. If you're out south, Snead's is pretty tasty. If you're out east, Plowboys is good, too.

If you're looking for a good time, you should check out BB's Lawnside at 85th and Prospect. The food is good and they have live music. It's one of the funnest places in KC.

BB,s lawnside on 85th was recently featured on diners driveins and dives. It harkens bark to roundhouses. The bbq is decent the vibe with live blues is outstanding. You can eat drink and catch some great live music. Byos (sauce) lol

Default ****** Rosedale BBQ *****

Damn JR, we've probably been there at same time.
Nice editorial on the rest, I could, but won't bother, rearanging the rest of the order cause your top two are the only ones that I spend $ in nowadays.

It's much easier to tell you where not to go. Good Q at anything approaching a reasonable price is getting damn hard to find. Unfortunately, my top 3 are out of business. I don't eat it much anymore because I'm tired of paying for disappointment.

Most places you have heard of rely heavily on the previous generation's reputation. On the KS side, Gates and Arthur Bryant, in particular.

Taste is absolutely subjective. You'll have to just try around next time you are here.
