on the toilet situation in india, the indian govt has been trying to discourage that practice. one of the ways they do this to build pipelines to bring portable water and sewer lines to many of these towns and build toilet facilities in homes. (its the type you would squat over a hole if you were doing it out doors - cheaper to build).
