Default let's celebrate Juneteenth!

you can't make this shit up people ....

New Orleans' Democratic mayor unveils giant hair pick to celebrate Juneteenth, promptly gets roasted: 'This is a joke'

https://www.theblaze.com/news/hair-p...ue-new-orleans

A giant Afro hair pick with a clenched "black power" fist was unveiled in New Orleans on Friday in celebration of Juneteenth – the holiday paying tribute to the last American slaves being freed. However, the eyebrow-raising statue was widely panned online.

The 28-foot-tall hair pick weighing 7,000 pounds is titled "All Power to All People," and was created by artist Hank Willis Thomas.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell – a Democrat – touted the hair pick statue as "breathtaking" on Twitter.

"As Juneteenth approaches, we celebrated with an unveiling in Lafayette Sq," Cantrell tweeted. "This sculpture is very fitting for this time & place as we celebrate the freedoms that we have gained We know that it doesn’t come without struggles, fights, and protests for 200+ years."

Cantrell said the city is spending $7.2 million to recognize "local black and brown artists," and their artwork would be displayed around public buildings in New Orleans.

However, not everyone saw the gigantic hair pick as "breathtaking" in reactions on Twitter – including many black Americans.

"Fearless" host Jason Whitlock: "Imagine being mayor of a major city, spending money on a monument that depicts the accomplishments of black people, and deciding on a hair pick. They would recall a white mayor for demeaning us. Instead, we'll shout 'Yaass Queen' and pretend nothing is wrong."

Author Darrell B. Harrison: "Because we all know how important it was for my ancestors to keep their afros lookin’ tight during those 'struggles, fights, and protests.'"

The Hodge Twins: "The best their artists could come up with is a Black Power hair pick sculpture. You can’t fix stupid."

Former congressional candidate Barrington Martin II@_BarringtonII: "Embarrassing. This is sick."
Singer Vinnie James: "These Democrats posed in front of a giant AFRO PICK? An AFRO PICK? This is how they celebrate the freedoms black people have gained? I'm in hell. Right?"

Writer Rod Dreher: "The City of New Orleans just unveiled a giant sculpture of an Afro pick. This is a joke, but it’s not supposed to be. How humiliating for a city that has given humanity so much great culture."

Writer Ellen Carmichael: "As New Orleans’ infrastructure crumbles and innocent people are being gunned down daily, Mayor LaToya Cantrell unveils a giant 'black power' hair pick in historic Lafayette Square. Her awful leadership is absolutely devastating for those with a history and love for this city."
Many online commentators noticed that the statue resembled the large Afro hair pick in the comedy movie "Spaceballs."

Last week, Cantrell unveiled a "Peace Poll" that was sponsored in part by the Tupac Amur Shakur Foundation – an organization associated with the former rapper.

As long as we're joking:

Facing Our Legacy of Lynching

https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct...epentance.html

Quote:
For Christians, that is also a key function of the Bible—a collection of memories, divinely breathed to be passed down through traditions and communities. So many of the stories, especially in the Old Testament, are not cut-and-dried morality tales or inspirational anecdotes. They are portraits of people who were wrestling with loving God and loving their neighbors, and they are full of both cautionary notes and urgings to be more faithful and righteous. Remember God’s covenants; remember God’s commandments.

Failing to keep God’s commandments, even at the individual level, could inflict deep communal wounds. In Joshua 7, Achan’s decision to steal forbidden treasure from Jericho was not an individual affair for which he privately suffered the consequences—Achan’s family plus some 36 others lost their lives because of it.

Woman shot at 5th and Burleigh following large crowds, fights in Rose Park

https://www.wisn.com/article/shootin...park/40343998#

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police said a 39-year-old woman was shot while walking on the sidewalk near 5th and Burleigh streets in Milwaukee.

That area is on the corner of Rose Park, where Juneteenth celebrations had just concluded.

The shooting was caught on camera.

Community activist and ComForce MKE leader Vaun Mayes was on Facebook Live when it happened.

He said he was at 5th and Burleigh streets because he heard police were making arrests and had forced a large group of teens out of Rose Park following fights.

WISN 12 News was at Rose Park around 5:30 p.m. and witnessed large groups of teenagers fighting, and police trying to break it up.

According to Mayes' Facebook live, around 7:15 p.m. on 5th and Burleigh street you see several large groups of people congregating and recklessly driving.

Then you see people run away from the yard of one home and can hear a woman scream 'he's got a gun!'"

Shortly after, you hear several gunshots go off.

Mayes and others run across the street to see who was hit, and begin helping a woman who was shot.

Mayes told WISN 12 News his team helped to Stop the Bleed until EMS arrived.

Police and medical professionals arrived shortly after.

Milwaukee police said the woman is expected to survive.

They're asking for the public's assistance. If you have video of the incident, or have any information contact Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips App.

Woman killed by police officer at Flint Juneteenth parade after shooting at officer first

https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/wom...shooting-first

watch the video and tell me if there will be any protests .. or not ..

FLINT, Mich. (FOX 2) - A woman was shot and killed by a police officer Saturday afternoon during a Juneteenth parade in Flint after police said she pulled up and started shooting a police officer.

Michigan State Police are investigating the tragic shooting and said the car pulled up to a Flint Police Officer working the Juneteenth parade route north of downtown Flint.

No one else was hurt, but on video the officer can barely stand in anguish.

It was around 2 p.m. when the 19-year-old Flint woman pulled up in her car and start firing at the officer. The officer fired back and hit the woman. She was taken to a Flint hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

On Monday, Michigan State Police identified her as 19-year-old Brianna Sykes, from Flint.

An anonymous witness told ABC12 in Flint that he saw what happened and watched the officer break down after the shooting.

Flint officer shoots and kills woman who opened fire on him during Juneteenth parade

A Flint Police Officer who was working traffic control for the Juneteenth parade Saturday shot and killed a woman who pulled up and started shooting at him.

https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/wom...shooting-first

"I saw an officer maybe ten feet to the left of me in front of a car with his gun out. I didn’t see if anybody shot out of the car but I did see the officer shoot into the car and I could tell that he, from his look, like he mortally wounded somebody. He instantly fell to the ground crying because I felt like he didn’t want to do whatever he had to do," ABC12 reported.

Video obtained by FOX 2 shows a silver car next to an officer, who has his gun out and pointed at the car. There is no audio but the officer can be seen talking and giving orders to the driver while keeping his weapon aimed at the car.

The video then shows the officer firing at least two shots into the car, which then rolls away. The witness who shot the video then pans back where the officer is on his knees and being consoled by another officer.

Police are still investigating what led to the shooting.

Nobody else was in the car and nobody else was injured.

Shooting in Washington, DC: Police officer, multiple others shot in popular bar area

By Teddy Grant and Melissa Gaffney

Sunday, June 19, 2022 10:16PM

WASHINGTON -- Multiple people, including a police officer, have been shot in a Washington, D.C., neighborhood Sunday night, the D.C. Metropolitan Police said.

The incident took place near 14th and U streets Northwest, in a popular area filled with stores, restaurants and bars, ABC News reported.

The D.C. Police Union tweeted that one of its members had been shot, was transported to the hospital "and is in stable condition."

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured, and no further details were immediately available.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division said it was assisting the MPD.

The area played host to "Moechella," a free concert celebrating Juneteenth, on Sunday.

D.C. police had reported an earlier, separate incident at the concert, where multiple minors were injured during a fight.

ABC News' Ben Siu contributed to this report.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Juneteenth celebration marred by gun violence in California

On Location: June 20, 2022
Catch up on the developing stories making headlines.

Juneteenth celebrations this weekend in California, South Carolina, Michigan and Colorado, a high school graduation party in Philadelphia and a concert in Baton Rouge were all marred by gun violence as five people were killed and 24 were wounded, authorities said.

President Joe Biden signed a bill Thursday making Juneteenth a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States -- just in time for Saturday's June 19 anniversary. It's a day Black Americans have celebrated yearly since the Civil War era, and this weekend was the culmination of a decadeslong effort by advocates to get national recognition for the momentous development in American history.

But gunfire erupted around 6:22 p.m. on Saturday in Oakland, California, near where people were gathered by Lake Merritt for a celebration marking the first Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The Oakland Police Department said seven people were shot, including a 22-year-old man who died from his wounds.

MORE: How 5 police departments are tackling violent crime surge in US

Police estimated that more than 1,000 people were at the lake and that the shooting unfolded despite a beefed-up police presence for the Juneteenth celebration. Cellphone video showed people running and seeking cover from a barrage of shots.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, officers spotted and arrested two men running from the scene with firearms, according to a police department spokesperson.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf condemned the shooting and praised police officers for their quick response to the chaotic scene.

"A joyous occasion at our Lake Merritt was marred by a senseless act of gun violence," Schaaf said in a statement. "Police in the area tended to victims and apprehended two people with firearms near the scene. The investigation is ongoing and will determine if they are connected to the shooting. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims."
At least three other Juneteenth celebrations across the country ended in shootings.

114 rounds fired at Colorado Juneteenth celebration

In Aurora, Colorado, an all-night Juneteenth party at a strip mall was ending around 4 a.m. on Sunday when multiple gunmen unleashed up to 114 rounds, leaving one man dead and four other people wounded, according to police officials.
Aurora police said no arrests were made.

MORE: 4 mass shootings in 6 hours leave 38 wounded, 6 dead across US

Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman said on Twitter that the shooting prompted him to schedule an emergency study session with Police Chief Vanessa Wilson "on the level of gun violence in our community and what actions the department is taking to bring it down."

Teenager shot at South Carolina celebration

In Clover, South Carolina, three people were shot around 11:30 p.m. Saturday at a Juneteenth celebration, including a 17-year-old who was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the York County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said several cars were also struck during the shooting.
No arrests have been made, and a motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Woman dies in shootout with cop at Juneteenth parade

In Flint, Michigan, a 19-year-old woman was shot and killed by a police officer near a Juneteenth parade after she allegedly opened fire on the officer, authorities said. The shooting unfolded just after 2 p.m., when the woman, whose name was not immediately released, was in her car and allegedly fired at least one shot as she approached the officer, who was working a traffic point at the Juneteenth parade, according to Michigan State Police, which is investigating the incident.
The officer, who was not injured, returned fire, striking the assailant, police said. The woman was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A motive for the shooting is being investigated, police said.

2 shot dead following concert

Meanwhile, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, police are investigating a shooting that broke out when a fight erupted after a concert.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Sunday, as people were leaving the concert at the Capital Park Bar & Grill, according to Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr. of the Baton Rouge Police Department. McKneely said investigators believe multiple people drew guns and opened fire in a parking lot near the concert venue.

The two people killed in the shooting were identified by the police as Kyren Walton, 25, and Ladarius Alexander, 20. Four other people were shot and wounded, police said.

Police were working Sunday to identify the suspects and determine the motive of the shooting.

3 shot at graduation party

In Philadelphia, three people were shot when multiple shooters fired up to 50 shots at 30 people attending a high school graduation party, police said. The shooting broke out about 7:25 p.m. Saturday at a house in West Philadelphia.

Injured in the shooting were a 36-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, police said. No one has been arrested in the shooting.

"Obviously, multiple weapons are involved here," Inspector D.F. Pace of the Philadelphia Police Department said at a news conference near the scene of the shooting. "Naturally, you have a family that is gathering to celebrate the advancement of one of their kids having graduated high school, and they have to suffer this. It's unconscionable."

MORE: Violent Memorial Day weekend: Shootings erupt in New York, Miami and more

The episode came just five hours after two men were fatally shot and a 3-year-old child was wounded in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. The shooting occurred in a street at about 2:30 p.m., and police said it appears the child was caught in the crossfire and was hit multiple times in the legs. No arrests were made, and the names of the two men killed were not immediately released.

Similar to other large cities across the country, Philadelphia has seen a 27% increase in shootings in the first half of 2021 compared to the same time period in 2020, and homicides are up 37% over last year, according to the police department.

While current national data on violent crime from the country's 18,000 police agencies lags behind, there have been marked increases in 2021 in some cities, such as New York City, which experienced a 77% surge in shootings and a 17% increase in murder through the end of May. More than 1,500 people have been shot in Chicago so far in 2021 -- an 18% increase from the same time period last year, according to the city's data.

The Atlanta Police Department said last week that its homicide cases in the first five months of 2021 were up 58% over the same period as last year. Baton Rouge has reported more than 70 homicides this year compared to 51 in all of 2021, according to police.

MORE: 'Disconcerting' rise in road rage shootings resulting in death or injury, data shows

At least 137 children aged 11 and younger have died in shooting this year, and another 343 have been injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive, an online database that tracks shootings across the country.

"As many of us began the day celebrating Juneteenth for the first time as a federally recognized holiday, we again found ourselves lamenting as an otherwise beautiful afternoon had been sullied with gun violence," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said in a statement.

Outlaw said she is especially outraged by the shooting of the child.

"Every act of gun violence is tragic. However, it is especially disturbing and sickening when the victims are among our most vulnerable," Outlaw said. "We should never tolerate violence against our children, as all of us -- not just the police -- are charged with the responsibility to keep them safe from danger and harm."
