The Republican Party is likely to lose the House of Representatives in 2024 after a new districting ruling in New York, GOP strategist Susan Del Percio said on Saturday.

The GOP has held a razor-thin majority in the House since underperforming expectations in the 2022 midterm elections, with the margin continuing to shrink as time has gone on. At the start of the month, Representative George Santos, a New York Republican, was expelled from his seat after nearly a year's worth of allegations and reports detailing his numerous lies and improprieties. Other Republicans, like former House Speaker House Kevin McCarthy, have also announced their intention to retire from office at the end of the year, further imperiling the GOP majority come 2024.

Last week, the New York State Supreme Court issued a ruling that called for the state's congressional district boundaries to be redrawn, with observers widely predicting that Democrats in the state will use the opportunity to shift two to six Republican-led districts in their favor. The GOP notably overperformed in the traditionally blue Empire State in last year's midterms, taking seats in districts that went for Joe Biden in 2020 and helping seal their party's House majority. This call for a new congressional map could help undo those gains in the next election cycle.

Del Percio, a Republican political strategist whose list of past clients includes the likes of Rudy Giuliani, suggested as much herself during a Saturday appearance on MSNBC. When asked about the significance of New York's decision for Republicans in 2024, Del Percio told host Al Sharpton that she expects the party to lose their majority in the House.

"Come January 1st, there is going to be a two-seat majority for Republicans, and they need every vote they can get," she said. "Frankly, I don't see how they hold on to the House. Of the six districts, three are absolutely competitive. Two are most likely to flip. So it will change that landscape, obviously. And I think it will lead to a [House Minority Leader] Hakeem Jeffries speakership. Let's put it that way."

Newsweek reached out to Republican officials via email for comment.

I for one am against gerrymandering regardless of which party is trying to undermine the elections. New York and California are blue states and always will be. Th article is well written and sensible, not exactly why conspiracy came to mind.

The comment about this being the least effective house, needs some clarification otherwise it’s an opinion and Like Daddy used to say opinions are like assholes ,everyone has one and they all stink.

How can they be more effective taking in their position
1. Extremely small majority
2. Dems have the Senate.
3 Dims have the Whitehouse.
4. Democrats vote in lockstep, I find it hard that no one disagrees with some of their ideas.
5. Biden would Veto any bill they put forward.

Can the American Public be that naive?

One of the joys of being old, believe me there aren’t that many., I will not have to witness the total destruction of America should we be blessed with the Dems controlling the House, Senate and Oval. We need to work together as a team , not as R’s and D’S. Surely there is some common ground.

The Republicans are not gerrymandering in New York or New Mexico. The Democrats are. New Mexico has somehow managed to assure that all three of its Congressional Seats are filled by Democrats, even though most of southern and eastern New Mexico votes Republican.

Democrats did such an effective job of gerrymandering New York in 2022 that New York Courts threw out the Democrats' map and instructed a special master to draw the map instead. The result is that Republicans control 10 of 26 House Districts in New York right now. The popular vote in House races in 2022 was 3,199,496 for Democrats and 2,525,335 for Republicans. So the Republicans are slightly underrepresented, but the outcome was much fairer than in many states.

Now a more partisan New York Court of Appeals has determined that the districts will be redrawn again. What's most likely to happen is that a bipartisan committee will unsuccessfully try to come up with a map. They won't, and instead the Democratic led legislature will come up with one that strongly favors Democrats.

So yes Yssup, the Democrats may very well take control of the House in 2024, due in no small part to partisan gerrymandering.
