Default Outrageous Discrimination in NYC

From the New York Times: Take New York City’s selective public high schools like Stuyvesant and Bronx Science, which are major Ivy League feeders. For the 2013 school year, Stuyvesant High School offered admission, based solely on a standardized entrance exam, to nine black students, 24 Hispanics, 177 whites. Are white 18 times as smart as black people, or is the admissions process flawed?

If I had to guess, neither. I would guess the 14 or so years that prepared the students to take the entrance exams were not equal. Part might be the elementary schools they attended, butprobably more their families.

By the way, were there no Asian, Native American, etc students, or did you not have those numbers?

"Based solely on a standardized entrance exam".

You would have to see the test to know if it was flawed, or skewered toward a certain ethnic group. What do you think would be on the test that would cause certain minorities to not know the subject matter?

Default if you are a Race bean counter......

I would suspect that rather than looking at statistics of the number of final accepted entrants a more telling statistic would be the racial make up of the number of those who took the test as compared to those who were accepted...

im much more concerned with the racial make up of the nba

It is a standardized test. You can either pass it or not.

Those schools are not responsible for the shortcomings in the upbringing of the students that take the admissions test.

Those schools are Ivy League feeders only because they admit students who are smart enough to score well on the standardized tests. As soon as you change the criteria for admissions to admit students who are not as smart, those schools will cease to be feeders for the Ivy League.

In other words, you can't have it both ways.

What purpose would be served in admitting less qualified minority students only to have them fail out or get barely passing grades at Stuyvesant and Bronx Science? They won't get admitted to the Ivies.

And if you change school grading policies to cover up their shortcomings, then they will fail out of whatever Ivy League schools admits them.

You NEVER solve a problem by promoting unqualified people.

The only thing that is going to improve minority student performance is better home life. About 70% of black children are born to single mothers. Get rid of that problem and black student performance will increase.

So, what is the progressive program that provides loving attentive fathers to black children? Got one?

Do you think it has anything to do with the extreme socialist nature of the school system where the elite know how to gain the best advantage leaving the crumbs for the masses. How were the ones that were OFFERED the entrance exam chosen? Was it based solely on ability or was it based on skin color? Is it fair to have those that scored the highest excluded in order to have those that are less capable given a spot because of skin color?

Only when people are treated equally based on criteria that does not include skin color will we truly have a society that is not influenced by racism. Race should not play a part in any function of government including our school system.

The greater good is served when a group that has had its talents ignored or actively discouraged now gets a chance to get in the game.

Most Ivy Leaguers who enroll can't seem to flunk out! All you have to do is get in and you have it made! http://www.usnews.com/education/best...etention-rates Colleges With the Highest Freshman Retention Rates At two Ivy League schools, nearly 100 percent of first-year students returned for their second year.
So they can let in anybody and they will succeed. It is just a political spoils system. I'm surprised everyone thinks so highly of a college that everyone who shows up passes.

People thinking like that is the reason it won't change anytime soon. That's the thinking of the people that have never been poor. it's widely discussed that there is a gross mismatch in the funding for schools in the poor communities as opposed to the schools in the more affluent communities. That's why they are pushing for more charter schools for poor kids to get a chance to have the same education richer kids get. If you think schools in the poorer communities are the same as the schools richer kids go to, then you just show the problems young blacks face in society because you won't be the only person that believes that falsehood. Even a child with no dad can succeed given a decent education and givin the same resources a child like that would have in a nice school. I'd like to see those stats if the white kids had went to similar schools as the black kids.

Anyone can succeed if they choose to succeed. The problem is we fill the so-called "underprivileged" with excuses rather than opportunities. No wonder so many fail. The are told from birth that if they are poor, or black, or Native American, or whatever, that they cannot make it. Why try?

The first thing that has to change is the attitude. You, and you alone are responsible for where you are in life. You can grow up believing the excuses, and blame the system for your failure, or you can decide that despite the obstacles, you will get where you want to be.

Yes, it may be easier for some than others, but it is impossible for nobody.

Hey Bjerk, Obamacare needs doctors right. So lets get some people who have been overlooked and make them doctors whether they pass the tests or not. You can be first in line for heart surgery.

Where were the Asians? Did they throw the curve?

817 Asians accepted, along with one white girl claiming to be Native American.

They made the numbers far worse, but we already know you people prefer them over us, because they are obsequious.
