How Venezuela's Economic Crisis Is Pushing Women Into Prostitution

More and more women are crossing the border to Colombia in the hopes of making a living wage.


Venezuela's months-long economic crisis has worsened, with citizens scrambling to get access to everything from condoms to toilet paper, and now, Venezuelan women are turning to prostitution to get by, a new report from Fusion suggests.

Prostitution is legal in Colombia, which is where more and more Venezuelan women are going to work. According to Fusion's Manuel Rueda, most women head to places like Cucuta, a busy border town, for a few days of work before heading back home to Venezuela. "There's nothing to do in Venezuela," a woman named Alondre told Rueda. "What we have there is a dictatorship."

Another woman, Jennifer, says that in Colombia, she can charge 50,000 Colombian pesos — equivalent to about $22 U.S. dollars — for 20 minutes of sex. The monthly minimum wage in Venezuela is about $21 and falling as the value of the Venezuelan bolivar plummets.

"I have my own business in Venezuela, but you can't make any money there," she told Fusion. "With a week of work here, I can make more than I can make there in a month."

Doesn't Venezuela have plenty of Oil? Almost every country with Oil has some kind of sustenance for their people. Hell I've seen the lines at Citgo, they have something coming in plus all of the rich drug lords that move there since there's no extradition, they can make money off of them! That's my opinion. So the oil co's left and service companies left or require prepayment because they don't want to walk away from their investment.

There is little or no investment now and the country's decline will match that of depleting reservoirs.

As for Venezuela, I'm sure within a few years if not sooner they'll be some kind of

revolution and they'll overthrow the current government, of course it may be another

dictator that'll take over, however, one of the superpowers will intervene. If they are

U.S. allies, the U.S. will intervene. If they are our enemies, we still will intervene. Either

way the Venezuelan people are screwed! I feel for the people in those situations,

however, my selfishness looks forward to the fine ass Venezuelan females that'll

be looking for an American male to get with. I met a guy who says when he was in

a relationship with one of those ladies, it was heaven! Of course she

wasn't Americanized, and hardly spoke English, so that goes to show that once they
