If the Government Ever Outlaws This, I Will Renounce My Pledge of Non-violent Resistance
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, the incomparable

I don't care who you are, what your politics are, what you think of me or anyone else, if this doesn't make you feel better, call your mortician and buy a box. You're late already.

Sweet; whenever I am in a "New York State of Mind" I put on my double record vinly recording of Mel Torme Live at Marty's, pour myself a nice burbon and water, sit and listen....wishing I was in the audience....that's Count Basie accompanying on "Mountain Greenery"....
Here is a link to the Itune version. Click on song for a short enjoyment of the Velvet Fog (with friends, live).

Here's Mel Torme on Seinfeld. It's one of my favorite scenes from the whole series. If you're not familiar with this episode, the premise is that Mel Torme has mistaken Kramer for being mentally retarded and invited him to a benefit dinner for the mentally retarded. Kramer's face is numb from root canal surgery.

I'd put Michael Buble in their league. Time will tell. I think there's a natural tendancy to consider the old guys to be better than today's talent. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. When Sinatra was the new kid on the block, they were probably saying, he's ok, but he's nothing compared to Rudy Vallee and Al Jolson.

We do have Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Stacey Kent, and a few others. You're right. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Some of the better crooners of today:
Diana Krall
Buble
Steve Terrell
For me the voice is secondary to the lyrics; I just don't think anybody is contributing to the great American Songbook the way lyricists/composers Cy Coleman, Jerry Mulligan, Mercer, Kahn, Berlin, Styne, Porter, et al. have.

What is amazing is that many of these lyricists/composers were new immigrants (Jewish) to America; but somehow captured the American sprit....Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" or Julie Styne's "Let it Snow Let it Snow"

There have been rumors, for a couple of years, that Brooks is working on a broadway musical version of "Blazing Saddles." Reproducing the campfire scene might be challenging. I loved the Frankie Laine theme music.

American culture is the best in the world. We have the best music, the best movies, the best colleges, the best entrepreneurs, the best economic system, and when the Constitution is followed, the best system of government. No one else is even close. Immigrants used to be eager to assimilate and were very often the most patriotic.
Excerpted from a speech by Theodore Roosevelt:
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907
