Funnily enough, I have never watched it. I don't really like the way it reinforces stereotypes about UK. We never lived as depicted in costume dramas, and modern Britain is entirely different.

There are much better, modern dramas. Do you get Wallender?

No but I have watched "In the Thick of It". Still trying to decide if it is a comedy or not. When did I say that I didn't like British imports? I watched "On the Buses" and " Doctor, Doctor" when I was a kid. "Fawlty Towers" and, of course, "Monty Python's Flying Circus" when I was older. My mother is still a big fan of "Are you Being Served" and "Keeping up Appearances" though I am not too crazy about the latter. How many American TV shows started as a British import?
As for Downton Abby, my favorite character has to be the dowager Maggie Smith. She is sharp and completely upper crust. Like when she asked what "spare time" is after they interviewed the doctor and he told them what he did in his "spare time" when he was not working. Of the scheming for her youngest granddaughter's Irish, socialist, car driving husband. She wants to help his writing career take off and then the right people could get him into parliment.

lived in London for 2 yrs, 2008-2010, married a Brit, MIL is a Brit,etc....still don't get the whole Masterpiece Theater/Upstairs/Downstairs thing.... but definitely love Top Gear
