If you've never been, IMO you've missed out. I just heard through the grapevine that Weingarten Realty, the landlord of the complex, is not going to renew their lease. Not sure of the closing date.

Basically, it's a seedy lounge style makeout place. VERY dark lighting. No one gives a shit what you do in the corners.

No sign. It always felt like I was taking someone to a speakeasy.

There will be no way they'll be able to duplicate that atmosphere. I assume they'll just shut down, but I haven't heard one way or another. Just heard they were going the way of the dinosaurs today.

Anybody else have any memorable experiences there?

I had an on again on again with a bartendress who worked there..she was great and the place was as advertised back then. When they hauled out the old couch it took a pry bar to get it off the floor.

Not sure how much of the seedy activity still goes on there. The owners made a big effort to clean it up a couple of years ago.The reputation remains however and Weingarten is working hard to improve the River Oaks Shopping Center.

What they really want to do is be able to tear it down and go vertical. But politically it's been more than they want to take on so far.

I'll be shocked if that shopping center still exists 10 years from now, though, unless the laws in Houston change.

Not sure about that. They just refaced all the buildings in '12 so there's no reason to tear that work down. They definitley want to kill RO Theatre, but killing Malfreless doesn't help that goal.

There is a good deal of pressure from West Ave, developments that incorporate apartments and condos with retail. I'm sure they want to get on that bandwagon, but they'd literally have to knock the entire center down to do that. Relocating the tennants alone makes that cost prohibitative.
