Default vets?

I adopted a mutt a few months back. Sweetest dog ever. She's been abused and is very timid and quiet. She occasionally chews socks and the blanket in her kennel (the kennel door is always open to come and go as she pleases but she chooses to stay there 80% of the time).

This week she's been different. I can't really explain it but little things she's just different. I'm concerned for her. I'm wondering if she ate too much blanket or something. I felt her stomach but can't really tell if it's distended or not. She's not eating much either. But maybe she's just not feeling well.

Is dog-distended the same as human-distended? Like would I be able to palpate it? What am I feeling for? How much time should go by before I take her in? What am I looking for? Its been a while since I've had a dog and I've looked online but not getting any answers really.

She is so calm and timid already that it's hard to tell if anything is wrong. But something tells me she might need to be taken in. I had her first evaluation at the vet spca recommended but I wanna read some other options.

Any advice is most welcome. We love this pup. She's part of the family now.

Is there a great vet in the northeast area of the metroplex that has a decent eval fee?

A good and affordable vet is off GB/78 south of the firewheel area, I think there's a hobby lobby in the same parking lot or near by.

Have used Josey Ranch in Carrollton for a long time, Josey and Kellar Springs, worked with my rescues at reduced fees if yours is a rescue. Fostered labs for years, they have been great with wide variety of behaviors encountered.

Being a blanket/sock eater I wouldn't wait to get her into the vet, those strings can wrap around the intestines and kill portions or her. They can do a fairly simple surgery to get her taken care of. They need to do a ultrasound and possibly blood work to see if its something else. They can get flu, colds and other things like we do. If I were close I'd look at her for you. Critters are my thing.

Keep socks and blankets from her, give her a good bone to chew (no knots at the ends) or other toys that won't pose a risk.

Default Be careful

If the pup has injested a blanket or towel it can definitely cause a blockage which you may not be able to feel. Some vets will prescribe a laxative and letting them try to pass it. I would not recommend that unless they can identify the material and the amount with reasonable certainty. The reason being that if there is enough material it will only get more entwined in the intestines and either be fatal or require a large piece of the intestines to be removed. This is a very touchy scenario.

Thank you so much THT. I've made sure to keep socks picked up but didn't want to take her bed. Looks like I may have to though.

On the advice from a pm I'm gonna reach back out to the spca again and see if they can look at her at their clinic.

If she was micro chipped at the SPCA, there is a pet emergency help line you can reach out to through Home Again. 1-888-466-3242. Hope she is feeling better soon!

Default bones

Also, having two Lab mix rescues, Buy the high dollar dry food and feed by weight, don't free feed, and furnish more desirable chew items, like real bones and pig ears.

they make pretty nice beds that aren't as easily chewed.

Good chew toys are great, if she doesn't seem to like them soak them in a beef broth then give.

I have a brand new karunda bed still in the box that you're more than welcome to have. I don't know what size dog she is, but it's yours if you want it. You know where I'm at.
