Default Finland leaders back NATO bid; Russia vows 'retaliatory' military measures

now we'll find out just how far Putin will go. can't say Finland is full of NAZIs. can't say Finland isn't a nation and belongs to Russia. given the shockingly poor showing so far Russia has only one play. yeah that one. we all go BOOM!

Finland leaders back NATO bid; Russia vows 'retaliatory' military measures

https://news.yahoo.com/un-warns-ukra...ycsrp_catchall

Finland's leadership announced support Thursday for expedited NATO membership despite dire Kremlin warnings of “retaliatory steps.”

The decision by President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin is strongly supported by lawmakers and citizens of Finland, though a few steps remain before the application process can begin. Neighboring Sweden is expected to decide on joining NATO in the coming days.

"NATO membership would strengthen Finland’s security," the leaders said in a joint statement. "As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance. Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay."

They said they hoped the application would be submitted in the next few days. Finland's minister for European Affairs, Tytti Tuppurainen, said Finland's parliament will vote on the matter early next week. Finland shares an 830-mile border with Russia.

“We want to defend our freedom and our equality,” Tuppurainen said. “This is not only about territories and borders. This war is also about values and ideology.”

Russia would view the move as a violation of international legal obligations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both of military and other nature, in order to curtail the threats that arise to its national security in this regard,” the ministry said in a statement.

I guess the Finns want to be rock star martyrs also.
Easy for the US to egg them on from an ocean away.

Does any of this remind you of 1939?

Russia looks to cut gas supplies to Finland amid NATO bid

https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics...upply-nato-bid

Quote:
Russia has threatened to position nuclear and hypersonic missile systems along its northwestern border with Finland if Helsinki and Stockholm move to expand NATO.

But Finland was reportedly prepared for gas ties with Russia to go sour prior to Thursday's announcement.

that depends. so far no one is trying to appease Putin. so if you mean the West is possibly going to force Putin to escalate by supplying Ukraine then Putin hasn't done anything about that yet. will he? perhaps.

many reports state that Putin intended to take all of Ukraine. that does not look like it's going to happen with reports of Russian troops quitting, sabotaging their own vehicles.

Russian soldiers simply don't want to fight and aren't very good at it when they do. in a war of attrition Russia is actually at a disadvantage, something thought unlikely before.

Putin isn't going to just leave with his tail between his legs like the Soviets in Afghanistan. so can Ukraine actually win which was considered impossible before? given that reports claim the Russians don't really want to fight and their equipment is old Soviet era shit, possibly.

Russia could commit more troops in an effort to win. not sure what Russia's total active duty forces are but if they are as bad as what they sent it wouldn't help much.

the most likely end is a negotiated settlement where Russia gets the disputed east and the bulk of Ukraine remains Ukrainian which would make for an awkward peace..

It would be better if these countries eloped with NATO and did the announcing after it is in place.

Russia recently changed their stance and said these countries can't join NATO. The reaction of these countries is we are sovereign nations and will make our own decisions.

Russia is the focus of evil in modern times.

interesting idea. normally it's a bunch of committees and a long drawn out process prior to a vote to admit. do you really think they can do that in secret and quickly? perhaps under the circumstances they can and while a bit risky it would be a interesting wrench to throw in Putin's face. just announce it's done. so what does he do then? launch an all out Euro war which by the piss poor performance of his troops to date doesn't look like he has any possibility of winning?

i don't think Putin wanted to start a war with NATO over Ukraine. and if he did he's seeing his forces struggle against what was considered a over-matched opponent. does he want to go up against far better air power? reports claim Russian jets are using commercially available gps in the aircraft because their built in devices suck.

Yup...I don't know why this isn't concerning people more.... they are going to drag us into a conflict that will, even if victorious, gain us nothing.

It will bleed us like WWI bled the British Empire.

The warf in Ukraine will only end when the Russians depose Putin.

Something like that has happened to nearly every Russian and Soviet leader since Stalin. That is just how it is done there.
