Being a huge fan of music, I have long ago stopped listening to radio, watching MTV or paying attention to the grammies. It has become great fun to search for artists of underground fame or ones that are talented and no one has ever heard of (hence frequent trips to NOLA)

Has anyone got any names to share of music they've discovered?

I’ve been listening to Latin music lately so none of it is “mainstream” to me or, and here I’m generalizing, most English-speaking types.

My all time favorite underground band is The Ramones. I don’t, nor have I ever, sought out the off the beaten path music. When I’m turned on to new music or artist, I’m usually, amazingly into drawn to the it. Since my tuning in and dropping out statement is and always has been not bothering with TV, I just don’t have time to chase up the best new music. I will absolutely have to check out Lauren’s list.

I'm so loving Mishka's "My Love Goes with You" - its my love song to my daughter....and "Coastline Journey" is beautiful too

MC Yogi - "Ganesh is Fresh" is my favorite - but its all great, fun music

Cee Lo Greens "F*ck You" - its such a great song to play loud and hard in the car. Its also a really well contructed song in terms of lyrics. This might be my all time favorite song right now.

Yes Nirvana is one of the few bands I've been in on since its inception. I also love the "back in the day" list of Sys's. Great list.

Growing up, I was blessed with a brother 10 years older than I who had a great ear for good music & spotting bands on the rise. He turned me onto most of the music I listened to & most of that long before anybody else had heard of them. He came home from a bar in DC one night raving about some kid that he was sure was gonna be big....Michael something or other....Stipe, I think....

Your list reads like the cast of one of those PBS Doo-wop specials that they run during "pledge time".
I'm not in any way dismissing or deriding your choices. It's just that when I watch those shows, realize that I grew up with that music, and then look at myself the question arises....Why does that audience look so old when I'm not?
