I have been to LA Fonda on Main, and Mi Tierra. Tourist oriented eateries that are OK, but did not blow my mind.

La Fonda on Main and of course Mi Tierra. Both have maintained their excellent reputations over the years. Mi Tierra routinely suffers from the same condition that caused Yogi Berra to say of Toots Shor's in New York, "The place is so crowded, nobody goes there anymore."

Been to SoLuna, La Fonda on Main, and Mi Tierra. If I had to rate them, 1. La Fonda, 2. SoLuna, 3. Mi Tierra. Obviously based o my tastes. SoLuna and La Fonda are pretty pricey but food is still very good. They are more upper scale tex mex. La Fonda has great outdoor dining in like a courtyard setting covered by trees and other nice greenery. Mi Tierra is like the touristy place to go and is more what you think of good ol' fashioned Tex Mex. They also have a bakery in there selling mexican sweet bread. These are all just based on my experiences there as I have been to those places numerous times. You looking to try places on the list?

Thanks for the feedback everyone..yes I am wanting to try different Tex/Mex food in the various cities I travel to...Austin, S.A. etc.... I prefer hole in the wall type locations with great food versus tourist type locations (unless the food is outstanding)....

The worst meal/experience I've ever had at a restaurant was @ Mi Tierra the last time I was there. The time prior it was poor. I'm not a fan.

Check out La Fogata. Really good margaritas. Great atmosphere.

Default Been there done that

I have been to Mi Terra, and I agreed the service has been suffering for many years now. The meals are not what they use to be as well. Guess they are suffering from thier own success. I have found other places, which are not in the tourist "Hand Book", which I enjoy more. I also have noticed that many Mexican families have thier own way of making the same meal and always no one does it better than them.

Been to Herrera's in Dallas MANY years ago, used to go with friends from SA who migrated to Dallas and were looking for Mexican food, at the time I thought it was good for Dallas but not by SA standards. There was a place called Mia's in Dallas, think it is still there, we all thought was better.

I have been to Avila's and Joe T Garcia's in DFW. Avila's is excellent, Joe T Garcia's is pretty good but there are better places for sure. When I travel home to Ft Worth, I always make it a point to go to Campo Verde and Mexican Inn.

Agreed. Tourist traps. Try Paloma Blanca.

Mi Tierra has got to be the most overrated restaurant in San Antonio, if not in all of Texas. Unless you are a tourist and want to take easy pictures, everything leaves a lot to be desired.
If handing you friggin salsa packets with your tacos de barbacoa for breakfast is what it takes for a restaurant to be called "best in Texas", then I guess the term is thrown around very loosely. And their much-heralded bread is really not any better than what you can buy at HEB.

Mi Tierra is the only place where (definite last time I will ever visit) they brought me some soggy, microwaved nachos, I tell em they're old, they claim they'll make me new, "fresh" nachos... and they just shuffled them around on the plate.

I think Mi Tierra lives off what tourists think is Tex Mex with the market nearby. I'm willing to give them great pastries and a decent bar but we have too many great restraunts in San Antonio to include them. My secret place for a little upscale is Ernesto's.
