Why GM decided against a recall.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/0...tml?ref=topbar
It was going to cost $1 per car. Boy, the trial lawyers are going to have a field day with that......

Toyota vs. GM
Eric Holder's justice department extorted a $1 billion fine from Toyota for a sudden acceleration defect that doesn't exist. A NASA team confirmed the absence of any software glitch or defect that trial lawyers and "safety experts" crowed about. The esteemed Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, went on national TV to warn consumers against unsafe Toyotas. In the end it was the same old myth that has plagued auto makers for decades, panicked drivers mashing ever harder on the wrong pedal. Darwinian natural selection at work. Too bad that ex-school teachers and political hacks like LaHood mislead the public. Toyota also lost several billion in market capitalization from stock loss.
By the standard of the Toyota fiasco GM should be liquidated and the proceeds distributed to its victims, including its bankruptcy creditors swindled by Obama when he trumped normal bankruptcy laws, stiffing bond holders and giving stock to the UAW. 13 deaths have been attributed to the faulty ignition switch. Remember that no one was injured by anything Toyota did. With the UAW having been given such a big stake of GM stock it is unlikely that the Justice Department will overcome the Obama administration corruption and apply consistent punishment to GM. After all, they are the home team even though every faulty switch was received, inspected and installed by a skilled UAW "worker".

Actually, I'm wondering if the bankruptcy proceedings did not cut off all liability for actions taken before the bankruptcy proceeding. That is typically one fo the things that is done. Otherwise, what is the point of a bankruptcy if you can lose all of the assets after the bankruptcy anyway.
The court might have set aside a liability $$ fund for just such an eventuality, but what if it is not enough?

Congress passes the laws, the chief executive only carries them out.
So, Congress passed the bailout package, not Bush.
Does all of Congress go to jail? Or just the ones who voted for it?

The chief executive is obligated by the constitution to carry them out, but the current guy chooses not to do so.
$0.57 for the part, how much for the installation in a recall?? it isn't so easy to pop an ignition switch out of the steering column, it being made to resist theft and all...They would have only had 0.57 more per car if they upgraded the part and assembled it at the factory that way. It might have cost them a hundred per car to recall it and replace it at the dealership. That might have been their thinking, cross their fingers and avoid the recall at the dealerships, the cheap ass bastards.

Cop out. The blame isn't on one guy. He isn't a dictator.
And the bailout only kept the company afloat. It did not require them to leave the faulty switch in place.
Also, look up "sovereign immunity".

Reread the article. They aren't talking about the cost of a recall.
The price difference was the additionally cost to use a DIFFERENT switch in NEW cars as they rolled out of the assembly plant. So the labor cost is a wash. Instead of installing a $2 switch, they would install a $2.57 switch from Delphi.
So, the labor costs would be the same. But the parts cost of the new car would be $0.57 higher.
GM was stupid.

Some stupid posts here today. Bush bailed out GM in the latter half of December 2008. He would be leaving office in less than a month. His justice department for all intents and purposes never had any oversight of GM during this time. Obama does not have the same excuse. His DOJ oversaw a major recipient of government money and a union that was a major recipient of government money. Can you say "conflict of interest". That is what this is all about. That was never the case under Bush.
