I used to play a lot of online poker. I don't anymore, but thats another story. Relevant to this thread, the following took place...
It was on a fairly small, team-oriented site where most of the players were familiar with each other, therefore there was a lot of chat going on at the tables, and I was an admin. There was a guy, real nice older guy, who played a lot. When a player would go all-in he would type in the chat box "lol <screen name>". Naturally, if the player that went all in would lose, he or she would get a little upset thinking this nice guy was mocking them, laughing at them going all in with whatever hand they had.

So, this nice older guy IMed me, asking why everyone was getting mad at him. I explained he was laughing at their play. He said he wasn't. So I asked what he was saying, because lol means Laughing Out Loud. He was shocked and embarrassed because he thought it meant Lots Of Luck.

So, it's dangerous to assume that everyone interprets abbreviations or acronyms to mean the same thing.
