Default Speakers not working

My computer speakers are not working. All I get is a low humming sound. I've had this problem before, but if I just play with the wires a bit, it comes back. This time it has not. I have a Dell desktop and Logitech speakers. Can anyone tell if this is a speaker or computer problem?
Any help is appreciated.

Plug the speaker jack into your phone or music player and play a vid or audio. If the speakers work then you know the answer. My guess based on the wire comment is gremlins.

Well, it's not the speakers. Any other suggestions?

desktop..new sound card or if not integrated move to a new slot

Maybe worth a go to uninstall the drivers and install again. Support.dell.com should walk you through getting the driver.

Could be hardware or software. Make sure you have not muted the sound. In device manager, uninstall the hardware. If prompted, tell it to remove the driver. Reboot. Windows 7 and 8 will automatically detect your sound card, search for the driver and install it if found. Download a new driver if needed.
