The way "honest" Abe Lincoln won a second term was closing down any newspaper which criticised him. He also threw in jail without charge over 30,000 people across the country who said anything negative about him in public. Many people where thrown in jail just for failing to say anything positive about the war when it was discussed in public.

If you do these things history shows you can win an election even if your policies are bitterly unpopular.
