Default Movie Conversion Question

Do any of you techie people know the best solution converting physical DVDs to good quality files for external hard drive access? I've been wanting to go completely disc-less but whenever I convert movies to files it looks like a low quality YouTube video.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can't do this with old DVDs but with most new blue ray movies they come with a digital copy which can be downloaded. Those are very good quality. I know this is not what you are asking but it's a good way to get a quality copy on your hard drive

Handbrake. Available for Mac and Windows. It's awesome and simple. It will let you set the primary kind of device you want to use it with and take care of all the detailed settings for you.

Blu-Ray is a different challenge.

There are several conversion programs that basically rip the security locks from the original DVD ...
Then I'd convert into MP4 ...
Low disk space and good quality ... Same quality as the ITunes videos ...

Thanks anyway - I'm good. I went with 1Click for the rip to VOB, then Handbrake to turn it into a single file. Handbrake is fantastic by the way, very easy to use. Thank you for all the suggestions.
