Well this didn't happen at band camp, but at tennis camp at Deerfield Academy in western Ma. (Awesome grounds.) When you first arrive, one of the camp coaches does an assessment as to who to stick you with: beginners, intermediates, advanced, or USTA tournament-ready players. The guy who did my assessment said I was an intermediate player, which means that you've played for a while, but still suck, bigly. I was like, u gotta be kidding me..

So the first weekend at the all-players' tourney, I blitzed through my half of the draw but finally lost in the finals to Ken Otaka, who was ranked #12 in Massuchusetts at the time, in a tough 3 set war. There were like 300 people watching, which was really cool/crazy. (First for me!) After that, I got promoted up to the USTA group lol..

Oh and hobby connection: this one chick had a pair of ginormous bobbies that were totally epic. I played her twice. Instead of worrying about winning-she had no chance in any case-I focused on dropshots so I could watch her lovely twins bounce up and down. She got so wet from running up and down the court that with her white shirt, I was treated to a yummy wet t-shirt show too. I made both matches run at least 3 hours by double faulting, missing easy overheads from the net, etc. There was no way I was going to let her go early. best. match. ever.
