Default Let's Be Rational

The incident in Newtown was horrific beyond imagination. The vitriol exhibited on this board is not going help.

I have no doubt in my mind that if any of us here were in that classroom, unarmed, would have hesitated to immediately jump on cover one of those kids to protect them, and possibly take a bullet for them, whatever our political leanings are. And that includes Yssup, Timpage, Ekim, CJ7, MarkRoxny, BigTex, Whirly or anyone else on this board. I just don't see any of us running to protect our skin when kids are in danger.

We need to proceed with that in mind. In times like these, cool heads must prevail. Something went terribly wrong, and the shouting will not help find a solution. No one approves of what happened. No political position any of us have taken supports or provides for something like this.

We can shout, insult and name call all we want on other issues, but out of respect for the children, and each other, let's try to be civil on this issue. We all agree this was horrific. We all want to never see this happen again. We will probably not all agree on the answer, but we can agree we want the same goal.

I am sure you speak for many of us, COF, myself included. Lets see how long it take for THIS thread to end up in ranting, raving and foaming at the mouth.

Well put, sir.

Time will tell.

When I first heard about it I thought of my own daughter who is in the same grade as those kids. I would gladly have done everything in my power to have stopped this type of madness.

In a country of over three hundred million people, you're always going to have a few people that are psychotic and dangerous. This sort of crime is usually done by someone who has completely lost contact with reality. Of course it's a terrible tragedy and unfortunately, it will happen again. It's impossible to keep the children completely safe. It's just the nature of the world.

How rational, Davey Crockett?

When is the conference committee to determine how many dead children will be acceptable....Im guessing it'll be way short of 20. What say ye?

We used to detain people who were dangers to themselves and us but that all changed in the early 1980s in New York. The places opened up and the homeless as they came to be called filled the streets. Now this kid was not homeless but we have become afraid to take action to protect ourselves and them.

As for protecting children in the classroom (and I work in a classroom) I go along with the Israel model. Trained armed teachers (adults) who will not only give their lives to protect the children but are also willing to take a life to protect the children.

JD, I wouldn't be suprised to read that you'd shot up your class someday if you had a room full of the liberal ones all gathered. So cut the John Wayne crap. Nobody is buying that shit from you. You hate 75% of our youths views on the world.

If we need trained armed teachers then tell me what they needed in Iraq a few years back when 10,000 children where killed by the US military?

Well said. The arguing and hostilities on here seem insifgnificant compaired to a tragedy like this, and if we don't put aside our differences long enough to look for real solutions then as a society we are worse than I had feared.

To ask "were her parents democrats or republicans?" before deciding to grieve for the victims is something that should never cross our minds. To use a tragedy like this to make stupid snide comments, or try to do political posturing is inhuman. I am thankful that most the posters (on both sides of the politics issues) have treated the threads about the shootings with the gravity and respect that is appropriate.

Those who haven't, regardless of their opinions on other issues, have shown themselves for what they are, and it is very sad.

Good post COG.

"Political posturing" will be part of asking the questions. Unless the solutions don't involve politics (laws, rules, regulations) - which is an impossibility.
