A gun is an inanimate object. It does exactly what it is designed to do, which is to propel an object via a controlled explosion. It cannot load itself, it cannot arm itself, it cannot cock itself, it cannot aim itself, and it cannot discharge itself...so how exactly does a gun kill??

Guns make it easier to kill. As I said in a different thread. Stand 10 feel away from me. If you want to kill me and you have a gun, there is very little I can do to escape death, unless you are a very poor shot. Take away the gun and I have several possible ways to escape death -- run, grab something with which to protect myself, or possibly simply out-fight you.

The two major reasons this issue can't be discussed is a lack of knowledge about guns and gun laws and lack of respect for the opinion of gun owners. I have to remind you that among gun owners are an inordinately large number of veterans, police officers, and good law abiding Americans. So why are you trying to insult veterans and police officers? Actually not. From the viewpoint of a tactical strategy it is more consuming for the opposition's resources if their people are alive after they are shot, so that some of the opposition's resources can be consumed treating the wounded, and at the same time those treating the wounded are exposing themselves to a likelihood of becoming a drain on the resources themselves ... another target.

In addition the appropriate manner of addressing the threat is not to "kill" the threat, but disable the threat to the point that the threat is neutralized and no longer a threat. That is the "defensive" posture to take in order to avoid the risk of being prosecuted for "executing" someone as opposed to simply defending yourself.

To those ends the firearm is an efficient tool to burden the opposition's resources and to neutralize the threat ... if the threat dies in the process, so be it. It is a secondary result and ought not be the primary focus of the persons defending themselves.

What about a knife, a bat, an ax, a tire iron, a 2x4, a vehicle moving at 30mph (or more), a frying pan, a rope, a plastic bag, a hammer, a screwdriver...?? I could go on for days. If a human being has a desire to kill, it will find a way. Evil, or stupidity, or irresponsible behavior cannot be legislated away. Additionally, you cannot legislate against any and every scenario that may ever conceivably arise. All that does is take away our freedoms incrementally.

You do not need to legislate against every scenario. Does it really matter what method was used to kill? All that matters to the legal system should be if it was:

Planned
Rage
Compassion
Accident
Defense

Anything else is just ridiculous posturing.
