I have not experienced this exact situation, but I have had some rather strange reactions to my looks. Two or three times I have heard something like, "You are soooo beautiful....why are you doing
this?" My reaction to that question is always the same. I get serious very quickly and ask, "Why, do you have a problem with it?"
Also, isn't it kind of part of the deal that we try to look our best? I mean, I guess they could be insinuating that I could get a man to take care of me without doing this, but that insinuation would not be made without the assumption that I don't like what I do. I hate that assumption.
One other strange reaction I have encountered was a man who told me just the opposite. He said that a woman who looks like me has no place in the working world. I know the "you're too pretty to do hard work" may seem like a compliment to the thick-headed, but it certainly doesn't sound like it to this little lady.
I hope this doesn't sound like I am just trying to brag about the men who find me very attractive. Trust me, I've heard things to the contrary as well! I can't be everyone's cup of tea.
