Default Russia Wants Naval Bases in Cuba

Haven't we been here before? Russian bases in Cuba. I thought some posters on here said that Putin was terrified of Obama. It was awhile ago. I guess Putin got over it.

What happened last time Russia wanted Cuban bases? Oh, yeah. We had a real President then.

Iran is building an ICBM base in Venezuela and the Russians are going back into Cuba. It's a bad time to have a Marxist in the White House.

The ground troops in Mexico is what we better start caring about. They have a defacto city/shop set up in Mexico with their eye on the border and coming to a state near you. The Mexican cartels seem to like the way they behead people too, match made in heaven.

And China is drilling for oil to help subsidize the Castro regime.

The rumor is they're going to slant drill into American oil reserves off of Cuba, probably with Obama's blessing.

That sounds a little far fetched. How close to Cuba do we have any oil reserves? The Russians had (might still have) the record for the deepest well drilled at a little over 40,000 feet deep. And it took them almost 20 years to do it.

Not farfetched at all, Duc. It's happening.

Sorry man but I didn't see anywhere in the article that it said they were drilling into our reserves. The article focused on the potential for a Macondo type environmental issue if they lost control of a well due to substandard drilling procedures. Certainly they own the rights to where they're driling or are proposing to.

When the US agreed to pull atomic missiles out of Turkey the Russians were happy to remove theirs from Cuba in 1962.

When the US takes its missiles out of Romania and other places they just put in, right on the Russian's border, then the Russians will take there's out of Cuba.

I hate the Russians.

But fair is fair and the Americans have surrounded Russia with US bases, missiles and allies in the last ten years.

The US is behaving more stupidly toward Russian than it ever has in the past.

I sort of skimmed over the article. I didn't see any reference to stealing our oil either.

Assuming the Cubans do offshore drilling at the edge of where they are allowed, and slant drill at that point, I suppose that would be the scenario in which they could tap into our reserves.

From AWB.org:

Offshore Drilling Ban Allows China to Steal U.S. Oil Reserves

While U.S. politicians argue over whether or not to tap our deep-water energy sources, Cuba is going ahead full steam leasing its fields in the Florida Straits. In fact, Chinese oil drilling rigs are already appearing within 50 miles of Key West.

The Chinese are planning to slant drill in the Straits allowing them to tap into U.S. oil reserves that are estimated at a minimum of 4.6 billion barrels and could reach 9.3 billion. This is the same amount of crude thought to be beneath the Alaska’s ANWR which Congress continues to place off limits as well.

Not only has Congress had its head in the sand with the moratoriums on leasing but, while it twiddles its thumbs, other countries will steal our oil. To top it off, our federal policy even prevents American companies from bidding for these leases in Cuba which would allow us to tap into our own reserves from a distance.

I was responding to the notion that the idea was far fetched. It's not. In fact, it appears to be both possible and likely. But it's ok. We can get our oil from Brazil if we ever need any.

If I were in your shoes, I would not bet on that.

On a beautiful day in summer of 2002, as I recall, I went to the Wednesday lunch buffet at The Mens Club of Dallas, as was my standard practice at that time. I found myself talking with a very interesting older gentleman.

He was the only B-52 aircraft commander in the US Air Force who did not fly his airplane out to his Fail-Safe point on That Day during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This was because he and his crew were landing, after a long training flight, when the orders went out.

He described meeting his brother officers on the flight line, as he and his crew were walking in and they were going to their airplanes. He said that every single one of them was "white as a sheet". They all believed, to a man, that This Was It.

It wasn't the US pulling missiles out of Turkey that got the Russians to back down. It was the radar reports coming into the Kremlin, showing a whole bunch of B-52s arriving on station, and the realization that the US was fully prepared to end Russian history over this threat.

Khrushchev blinked. The Soviet Union backed down.

They both backed down, had neither one backed down, we would not be here talking about who invented the internet.

We did take missiles out of Turkey, that is a fact and a direct result of the stalemate. Many historians think Kennedy got schooled in this endeavor.

While it is "possible" for someone to directionally drill from one lease to another, it's not legal. That's not to say someone wouldn't attempt to though. It's just that there are so many variables involved I find that an unlikely scenario. Now if two leases, side by side share the same reservois, then it's more than possible to deplete that reservois from either lease. Nothing the current admin. would do in that regard would surprise me. They are clueless. But then we haven't had a real energy policy in this country since the time we needed one so they're not the only ones by any stretch.
BTW, I have approx. 10 years experience roughnecking so I do have a little knowledge in this arena. Based on that experience I can confidently say, don't use the term "slant drill".
