Ransom virus

I was on my PC and it locked up and a screen popped up that will not release my computer. The virus demands that I get a money pack for $300 and enter the code to unlock my computer. Claims to be the federal govt but it's not of course. Anyone have experience with this? Help getting rid of it?

It happened to me a few weeks ago but I was lucky. I was able to simply unplug and restart my PC and it appeared to be gone. I did run Malwarebytes after to make sure. The same same thing happened to 2 of my friends and they weren't so lucky. It even took a picture of the one friend that had a webcam through her webcam and posted it on the phony FBI warning. Both of them had to take their PCs somewhere to get it removed.

If you got rid of it easy you are very lucky. the version I got, I had to wipe my laptop and restore from my backup system. I lost a lot of temporary and recent files.

Best bet is to get a FREE and very very good malware system which is called Avast. you can download it and start using it right away. I paid for extra protection because I am using it on multiple computers, but the basic plan is free and it catches things that no other system seems to catch.

There are a number of these circulating. One is called the FBI virus, it freezes your computer and shows the FBI logo. Same scan: send money or else. Payment does not clear it. Google FBI virus and you will be amazed at the amount of information.

I had this a while back and had to contact Norton/Symantec (my virus protection). They asked to take remote control of my computer and did a complete search. It took awhile, but they got it out.

Even if you restarted and it went away, I am certain the virus is still present and will show again.

This is true. That virus is still there.

I had that shit on my laptop and had to get my whole computer wiped clean.

Funny thing is that ever since I've been using Mozilla Firefox as a browser I haven't had a virus issue yet. Internet Explorer is a bunch of bullshit!

I recently ordered this for $2.95 each to use as Internet Browser kiosks for my employer. It works great at home too - if you have a wired connection.

Just put it in your CD/DVD drive, after about 2-3 minutes to boot, you will have a internet browser. It will not remember anywhere you went or save anything to your hard drive. You can even run it on a computer without a hard drive as long as you have the boot from CD/DVD option. If you click on a bad link that wants to infect your pc or you get a bunch of pop-ups, just turn the PC off and then back on. Hope that helps.

Otherwise, make sure you update and run several AV/Malware/Spyware/Adware programs once you think you may have been infected. A lot of virus's etc will also infect the system restore files from my experience.

I had the same virus a while back. I had to unplug the internet connection, go to another computer and download Maleware Bites to a memory stick then download on the infected computer. Ran it and it fixed the problem. It also found a few other things that needed removed as well.

It is almost to the point of having a hobby laptop. You can get a netbook for about $200, or a Chromebook for $250. Probably only good for surfing anyway. Then when this crap happens, set it on fire and get a new one.

You paid for a bootable CD that allows users to browse?

www.distrowatch.com - download ubuntu or just about any flavor of linux.. burn the iso to disk and you can do a live boot.

Should you install linux you won't see these virus's at all

Yes, I am busy and we needed 60 of them. I obviously downloaded and burned the first one for free but do not have the time to waste burning 60 of them. Thanks!
