9mm v. .45

I figure we got some gun guys here.

We've all heard the endless arguments on this topic. I'm a 9mm guy, Glock 19 all the way. The 1911 platforms are too complicated, too prone to jamming and too heavy. They do point better and probably (well, for sure) hit harder but 7 rounds versus 15 (in my G19) seems like a no-brainer. Who carries what and why? I'm leaving .40 caliber G22 and G23 out of it....that's another thread.

Well Glock .40 model 22 , 9mm is a great gun no doubt. comfotable for concealed carry plenty of fire power, but the 9mm round although quick simply lacks blunt trauma your fire fight could last longer than you may want it to. The 45 Cal. Although blunt trauma is unsurpassed the 45 is heavy, cumbersome, uncomfortable to carry concealed. Recoil intimidating and could hinder some users to become proficient shooters. So in my opinion the .40 cal gives the best of what you'll find in the 9mm and 45 cal. The Glock line of .40 cal. is offered in three models the 22,23 and 27. Another great 40 cal Semi Auto is the Sig Sauer Model P-250. Little heavier than the Glock not as comfotable to carry concealed but still an excellant choice. My suggestion choose a gun that you can become proficient with and will carry. Nothing wrong with carrying concealed hand guns.

Para-Ordnance Expert 14.45

I have test fired 40-50 hand guns in the last 2 years. This pistol feels right in my hand.

The Para snaps right back on target after each shot unlike any pistol I have ever fired. It holds 14 .45 ACPs.

And it's heavy enough if I miss 14 times I can damn near kill someone by throwing it at them.

I have a Springfield 45 with an extended ported barrel, it kicks about
like a 9mm. Has never failed to cycle or fire.

I also have a Smith & Wesson M&P 40cal that I like better than
any Glock that I have fired.

Wouldn't trade ether one of them for something else.

The Para's are sweet too. I have owned a few.

Never owned a 9mm. Shot a few though, don't care for them.

I suppose it depends on the preference and size of the shooter.

Both guns will do the job if you can hit the target, but which one feels more comfortable in your hand will affect that.

. . . Having tried all of them, I prefer the 9 mm because it gives me more accuracy and with a laser, it is deadly!

Have always preferred the knockdown power of .45. That being said, it's all about shot placement and a 9mm is going to be easier to get off a folllow up shot with greater accuracy for most people. There's also some very nasty defense loads available these days that make 9mm a very potent choice.
Still, I carry an HK USP .45 compact and have a Kimber Pro Carry II for the range and occasional carry. I prefer carrying the da/sa for added safety but nothing shoots like a single action trigger.

I don't buy into everything you say about the guns. My carry is a Taurus PT 145. It is small, fairly light, and carries 10 .45 hardballs in the magazine.

As for the round; .45 beats 9 mm in almost everything. The only things that the 9 mm has is capacity and penetration. Most self defense involves an unarmored target at close range. I'll take the .45 ACP everytime over the 9 mm.

As for some other claims; I read the report back in the 1980s when they wanted to adopt a new sidearm. The Glock did not exist yet but the entrants were Smith and Wesson, Colt, Beretta, and other 9 mm semi-automatic pistols. Some Colt 1911A1s were used as controls. When it came to jamming the Colts beat everything. The pistols were put in a mud tank over night and then rinsed out with a garden hose. No cleaning, no oiling. 1911A1 was the winner. Accuracy: The 1911A1s were 20 year old guns that were in service but they still did respectfully against their newer cousins. Reliability: All of the shots (and misfires) were recorded in the survey, winner 1911A1! The catch was that the contract required a 9 mm, double action, semi-automatic, with at least 10 round capacity. The competition was designed for the Beretta to win as a nod to our NATO allies.

Go check out what it took to come up with the greatest battle rifle ever made; the M-1 Garand. It was not the starter and neither was the 30-06.

I stopped reading after I saw the word "Taurus".....you obviously have no idea what you're talking about if Taurus is your weapon of choice for self-defense. They're junk.

I ran into a guy at the range once recently who works in the DA's office who carrys a Kel-Tec PMR30. 30 rounds of .22 magnum and @1lb 3oz fully loaded. Cool idea but the trigger is pitiful on them.

Own both. Prefer the Baretta M9 for handling, but "jamming" was never an issue with the M1911. Fired the Glock and the Sig. The Sig also has nice handling and would merit further attention if I didn't already own the Baretta.

You can still get .45 ammo. I just called my guy and ordered 5 more boxes. My 1911 fits my hand.
