An escort friend of mine mentioned Annie Sprinkle a few months ago and I just ran across her name again. I had never heard of the woman until recently and had no idea how popular or well-known she is.

Um, yeah! I remember watching her golden shower video, 20 yrs ago. I was stunned then, but it's no big deal now. She is a very open person.

What I really admire about her is that she is very supportive of sex workers and back in the day, she would give tips on safety & self-care. She was soo right. You have to 're-charge your batteries' to give your client GREAT service.

I love her, thanks for the reminder of a really smart, amazing woman who dared speak her own mind.

Annie was in one of the first porn movies I ever saw 20+ years ago. No golden shower in that one, though. Saw her HBO special as well a while back. She's quite a character.

Well, I guess that I do have to ask. The HBO special. Was it like a comedy show? The problem with saying, "She's quite a character" and we kindof know what you mean, is how much of one?

I've seen some of her performances in the distant past. The memorable one is her sucessfully deepthroating John Holmes. Extraordinary!

I know she was on Real Sex and maybe some other HBO shows but if I remember correctly her show was mostly about "teaching" sexual techniques to women. Could have been co-ed but I don't recall. Between her costumes, her mannerisms, and role playing games you just had to laugh because you knew she just loved everything sexual and wanted to show what she knew to anybody who would listen. I think they also showed one of her "performances" at a club of sorts where she pulled up audience members to help her with spankings and the like. It's been a while so it's a little vague now, but that's what the voices in my head are telling me.

She was one of the pioneers of sex-positive feminism, and has been a wonderful force for the promotion of positive attitudes toward sex and women. She's on the short list of people that I've always wanted to meet.

Now Sharon.....we could start a whole new thread on her. Her HBO special was a classroom type of environemnt where she talked about her sexcapades and gave the ladies and gents there advice about sex. She did it in a kind of "Vagina Monologues" format and at the end she used a speculum to open herself up and encouraged participants to come up and look "deep inside Annie Sprinkle"!

Calling her autobiography Post-Porn Modernist, Annie Sprinkle is a pleasure activist and a major player in the feminist porn movement. With a lighthearted comedic persona, she manages to deconstruct victimization with an amazing combination of humor, education, and spiritual belief. As an actor, writer, director, photographer, and sex worker, she has spread a sex-positive message throughout her career in numerous books, visual arts, and live performances. Since the early '70s, she starred in over 50 known porn films before directing herself in Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle in 1981. She stopped making mainstream porn in 1991, and turned to low-budget features, late-night cable shorts, and documentaries. Mostly appearing as herself, she has worked with experimental filmmakers like Nick Zedd, Nina Hartley, and Monika Treut. She focused on directing and producing with Linda/Les & Annie: The First Female to Male Transsexual Love Story and The Sluts & Goddesses Video Workshop: Or How to Be a Sex Goddess in 101 Easy Steps. Her videos in the early '90s reflected her live performance art at the time, which was part sex education, part spirituality seminar, and part comedy show. What also merits mention is that she was never classically beautiful, nor did she have the typical body type you find held as our US ideal. And it bothered her not one bit. She seemed all about having fun, and making fun, in a safe and positive way. If you couldn't enjoy that too, well the loss was yours.

I remember "Annie's" movies, with a few being banned for the shower scenes, which at the time just made you want to see it more. She was a pioneer in the industry, thats for sure!
