Thanks for the post, Debbie. Chomsky is one of the most interesting people alive today, and may well be one of the most intelligent. In many ways he is an example of one who excites reaction, polarizes people, has some excellent points, and has some strongly felt beliefs that would be great but are highly unlikely to ever work in a world inhabited by humans.

It is difficult to hear that clip and not want to stand up and cheer, "Unfetter the minds of the young! Free thought for all!". Unfortunately, as he hints at in his talk but then skips right past, if everyone was idealizing about the truly great and wonderful new physics thoughts then we would have no "indoctrinated, obedient people" actually growing food in the meantime, and that would have some rather serious consequences.

Some unbounded free thinkers are helpful, too many are harmful. Balance in all things. The troubling part is: who decides whether an individual should be put on the free thinking track or the obedient track?

Even for Noam, the world is not as simple as he would like (and his world is far less simple than most humans).

Chomsky has been around for decades, his attitude toward ruling society has changed little.

Where he goes wrong is he leaves out the most important aspect of the human experience, that being, Human Nature.

Idealism and utopian thought is great for the class room, and perhaps in conversations among academia, but the brutal truth is, the world is a very evil place, it has been throughout history.

I would have loved to see Noam give one of his thought provoking lectures in a Country such as Stalinist Russia, or perhaps Saddam's Iraq.

They would have simply put him against the wall.

I have read Chomsky and in my opinion he is a pud. Ivory tower thinking but no real grasp of reality. He could be put into a room with others like himself and we can come by every once in a while and listen to them for entertainment. He also seems to have a real hard on for what we consider nowadays to be conservative thought. As someone said, he likes the idea of the obedient class of people because he will, of course, be part of the thinking class. Funny how that always works out that way with closet fascists. The French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan all had people that supported and advanced the cause to rule over the people and then many of those people met the same fate as the lower classes that they intended to rule over. Chomsky would have us install a communist system but he would probably end up in front of a blood stained wall for his efforts.

I don't know him personally so it is hard to assess that, but from his readings and speakings I think is is an unrealistic idealist more than a liar.

Progressive hero Noam Chomsky is terrified of the surveillance state that has developed during the tenure of President Barack Obama, calling it a grave threat to our fundamental civil liberties.

In a column published Monday, Chomsky writes that the documents revealed to the public by Edward Snowden show a system that is flagrantly violating the principles of the Constitution.

“It is of no slight import that the project is being executed in one of the freest countries in the world, and in radical violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights, which protects citizens from ‘unreasonable searches and seizures,’ and guarantees the privacy of their persons, houses, papers and effects,” Chomsky said.

“Much as government lawyers may try, there is no way to reconcile these principles with the assault on the population revealed in the Snowden documents.”

The scope and depth of the National Security Agency’s surveillance program is what particularly troubles the retired MIT professor and leads him to conclude that our current president is set on undermining the foundations of our society.

“The documents unveil a remarkable project to expose to state scrutiny vital information about every person who falls within the grasp of the colossus — in principle, every person linked to the modern electronic society,” Chomsky wrote. “As the colossus fulfills its visions, in principle every keystroke might be sent to President Obama’s huge and expanding databases in Utah.”

“In other ways too, the constitutional lawyer in the White House seems determined to demolish the foundations of our civil liberties. The principle of the presumption of innocence, which dates back to Magna Carta 800 years ago, has long been dismissed to oblivion.”

All this adds up to a system that George Orwell would’ve been incapable of envisioning as “Nothing so ambitious was imagined by the dystopian prophets of grim totalitarian worlds ahead.”

I agree with most of what Chomsky says. Yes, he is an idealist and a great thinker. Change is always hard, but if we just give up, we have become exactly what the Elite powers want. . .docile slaves at their command!

The best advice I can give anyone on this board is to question everything that is happening right now. Just because it's on Fox news, does not mean you are seeing the "whole picture". Most of the media is owned by one man!

I don't think anyone here has said that Fox puts out all the news. You have to have several news sources including some outside this country to get the full story. Take the latest jobs report for May, the headline was that we recovered all the lost jobs in this country under Obama but that is not the whole story. You have to go to the British and European press to find that the US has created enough jobs to put us back to where we were BEFORE Obama took office. We have not created enough jobs to make up for all those jobs NOT created since Obama has been in office. We are still at least 7 million jobs shy of where we should be by all accounts. The US press doesn't want to touch it for obvious reasons.

I am also concerned that you agree with Chomsky. Yes, he gets it with the invasion of privacy and intrusiveness of government under the progressive Obama regime but Chomsky would still like an ordered society with people like him naturally being in charge. He just disagrees with the way Obama is going about it.

Chomsky notoriously ignores militant Japanese Imperialism in China and Indochina during the 1930s as he places major blame for the Pacific War during WWII on the U.S.

I am all for a Utopian Society, even a communistic system.

That is, as long as I can be on the Politbureau and have the Dacha on the Volga.

Idealistic simpletons like Chomsky seem to be enamored with societys and governments that have "People's Republic" and "Democratic Republic" in their name. They are to naive to realize that in these systems, the first ones sent to The Gulag are his ilk.

And Debbie, you have to forgive IIFFy. He is not very familiar with those words. He much prefers "unfair", "heartless", and "bigotry". He also isn't really sure how to treat a young lady sine he hardly ever interacts with one.
