Be careful of horse manure, lots of weed seeds as they don't digest as well as cattle.

Gen, I would recommend a blend of cow manure with another soil additive; too much manure may burn your plants.

If you are looking for a large quantity, Natural Gardener and several other places can deliver or you can get a pickup truck load, usually a half a yard will fit into a pick up bed.

I have gardened for years and love it for the stress management as well as the benefit of eating out of your own backyard; and now is the time to begin preparing your soil for the spring planting.

A good mix of cow manure, compost, and light sand will work very well for most Austin gardens. I do raised bed gardens so as not to deal with the weeds and heavy clay soil around my house.

I concur to use caution with the manure. I've always heard that you need "well rotted" manure to use as fertilizer or it will burn your plants.

Type in "manure" on craigslist-for sale and a couple of options pop up especially for free horse manure which is my favorite since it is less likely to burn plants than cow or turkey manure. If manure is piled up and composted at the ranch it usually gets hot enough to sterilize most of the seeds. If you keep a compost pile just layer it on and let it decompose. I also remember some guy from Manor that sold mixed and composted horse manure and would deliver - check craigslist. Use manure sparingly, just top dress soil with a half inch is plenty.

Yes, I know not to use too much. (I already have a good amount of regular top soil down, just need the manure to mix in for nutrients.)

i also heard bat guano is a very good fertilizer. and with austins bat population i would think it might be available, even though the bats arent here at this time. ill bet somebody harvested some just for this purpose

Be careful with the bat manure also; it just needs to be used sparingly, I use it around my onion sets.

Gen, right now I have put in onion sets, purple sets and sweet white sets, Romaine and Buttercrunch lettuces, radishes to follow with carrots and beets next...I may be up to bringing you a chef salad soon!

Bat guano is used as fertilizer, but that's often very old guano that's sat around and accumulated for years or centuries and has had time to age and mellow.

If your up for a road trip, there are some mushroom farms (owned by Campbells soup I think) scattered around Texas. They use a compost blend to grow the mushrooms and then sell it after each batch. I was told it has bat and turkey poop along with many other 'good shit' stuff! I used it in a large garden several years ago and it was 'super garden' for several growing seasons. You might check it out!
