David Chipman’s nomination to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives appears to be going down in smoke. That he was nominated at all is an indictment of President Joe Biden and his gun control agenda.
© Provided by Washington Examiner Sen. Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has reportedly
signaled that he is currently opposed to Chipman’s nomination, which is already hanging by a thread, with Democratic Sens. Jon Tester of Montana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia yet to make a call on whether they would help push him over the finish line. King’s opposition would be the end of the line.
Chipman was a terrible nominee from the moment Biden picked him. Chipman
justified the ATF’s Waco raid of the Branch Davidian compound, where 86 people were killed in an unnecessarily militarized stunt. Chipman lied about Branch Davidians shooting down two Texas Air National Guard helicopters.
But that wasn’t the only blot on Chipman’s ATF record. According to Stephen Gutowski at the
Reload, current and former ATF agents have
corroborated the existence of a complaint that Chipman made racist comments while working for the agency in Detroit.
To top it all off, Chipman is a proud gun-grabber. He has said he is in favor of banning “assault weapons,” refusing to give a definition of what he thinks that would entail. Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas got the closest thing to an answer out of Chipman, which is that essentially every modern sporting rifle in the country would qualify as an assault weapon.
That Biden thought he could push someone as clearly unqualified and politically radical as Chipman through a 50-50 Senate is a testament to his own hubris. This is not Xavier Becerra, whose abortion radicalism is mainstream in the Democratic Party and who wouldn’t see many Democratic objections as a nominee for Health and Human Services during a pandemic when Democrats would want to give Biden his preferred health team. Gun control is still a losing issue for Democrats, so much so that even purple-state Democrats such as King are wary of it.
Biden thought he could get away with it because he did the gun-grabber thing throughout the campaign. After all, he had praised gun confiscation supporter Beto O’Rourke, and the Democratic convention
propped up anti-Second Amendment messengers. But, as is often the case with gun control, feel-good rhetoric doesn’t translate to political reality. Chipman was always a disaster, and even if his nomination fails, it should serve as a reminder of “centrist” Biden’s true gun-control agenda.
