I generally ignore most ads with area codes outside 412 and 724. 814 may get my attention.

If you've been around awhile it's not too hard to spot a fake ad, pics can really tell the truth of the ad also phone#'s or replying by email. Listcrawler and STG is full of b.s. ads.

Most bogus ads are definitely easy to spot. Most outside area codes are bogus and any with an email only are bogus. Fake photos are pretty easy to determine as well.

Maybe I still have a little bit of optimism when I see new ads with 412 or 724 area codes. I usually send a text message to snoop them out. A lot never respond, some do, few are legit.

Location often can be used to spot fake ads too. Often the scammers are posting in multiple cities and are too lazy to create separate ads for each. Therefore ads with an overly general location like “in your city” or “nearby” are obvious. Less obvious ones like “airport area” or “downtown” can also tip you off. After all, while they sound like real locations, they still can be used for multiple cities — all cities have a downtown and an airport. I’m more apt to think an ad is real if I see a specific area such as Monroeville, Greentree, Cranberry, etc.
