Moody's is set to downgrade the credit rating of the US once again. Will Congress and President step up to the plate to prevent this, or not?

The following is the text of a statement Tuesday
by rating agency Moody’s:

Budget negotiations during the 2013 Congressional legislative
session will likely determine the direction of the US government’s Aaa
rating and negative outlook, says Moody’s Investors Service in the
report “Update of the Outlook for the US Government Debt Rating.”
If those negotiations lead to specific policies that produce a
stabilization and then downward trend in the ratio of federal debt to
GDP over the medium term, the rating will likely be affirmed and the
outlook returned to stable, says Moody’s.

If those negotiations fail to produce such policies, however,
Moody’s would expect to lower the rating, probably to Aa1.
Moody’s views the maintenance of the Aaa with a negative outlook
into 2014 as unlikely. The only scenario that would likely lead to its
temporary maintenance would be if the method adopted to achieve debt
stabilization involved a large, immediate fiscal shocksuch as would
occur if the so-called “fiscal cliff” actually materializedwhich could
lead to instability. Moody’s would then need evidence that the economy
could rebound from the shock before it would consider returning to a
stable outlook.

Moody’s notes that it is difficult to predict when during 2013
Congress will conclude negotiations that result in a budget package. The
Aaa rating, with its negative outlook, is likely to be maintained until
the outcome of those negotiations becomes clear.

The rating outlook also assumes a relatively orderly process for
the increase in the statutory debt limit, says Moody’s. The debt limit
will likely be reached around the end of this year, and the government’s
ability to meet interest and other expenses out of available resources
would likely be exhausted within a few months after the limit is
reached.

Under these circumstances, the government’s rating would likely be
placed under review after the debt limit is reached but several weeks
before the exhaustion of the Treasury’s resources. Moody’s took a
similar action during the summer of 2011.

sooner or later some sort of congressional reform will have to be implemented to limit the filibuster bullshit that has set record numbers the last 3 years ... politics is politics, but politics is also give and take with a little horn locking in the interim .... congress will be the death of us all.

If you can't get a 60% vote to do something in Congress then it should not be done. There is a lot more than political games behind the filibusters. I wish they needed 60 votes to pass anything.

even if you can get a 60% vote a filibuster can tie up that vote until it either withers on the vine or gets diluted down and coupled with another piece of legislation the side filibustering wants to pass but cant otherwise ..

Sixty percent is sixty votes. You can't filibuster a sixty vote majority. I learned that in junior high school.

So is there a way to stop Senators from simply blocking bills they don’t like – even popular ones – through the use of filibusters? Yes: the rest of the Senate can vote to invoke cloture, which is another fancy Senate process term which essentially is a counter-motion to the filibuster. A motion to invoke cloture is a vote to cut off debate anyway. It overrides the filibuster, allowing a regular, simple-majority vote on the original bill to be held. But the catch is that in order to successfully invoke cloture and cut off debate, ending the filibuster, Senate rules require 60 Senators voting yes to pass.

If the Dimos have sixty votes they can block any threatened filibuster by the Republicans. According to the chart you linked to, the Dimo's blocked 61 filibusters.

Unfortunately...whether you are Demo or Repub...liberal or conservative

The political enviroment in DC, is truly full of politicans...very few actual leaders on either side

As a result, we merely get bandages or push backs when dealing with real issues facing US
