Default Top Secret Clearance and the Hobby

If you are required to maintain a "Top Secret or Higher" level security clearance. Could hobbling jeopardize that in any way?

If so does this effect how you hobby, or if you hobby?

Anything in your background that could be used to control or blackmail you would be a red flag. I had "Secret" clearance at Microsoft because I worked in support on military computers from time to time. PS: Their security personel have no sense of humor, especialy the gun carrying ones.

My security clearance prevents me from answering that question. Besides, if I told you, I'd have to kill you.

My smartass remark here will be... if you are smart enough to reach top secret clearance, wouldn't you already know the answer to this question? Or is that assuming too much intelligence?

Very seldom do I see or hear a question that I think "Wow. That's a stupid question."

This one however qualifies.

Who you talk to can jeopardize it.
Websites you go to can jeopardize it.
What you say can jeopardize it.
What area of some towns can jeopardize it.
And the list goes on...

Any more questions?

The answer is yes, it will affect your clearance. When your background is checked, they're looking for anything that might give them cause for concern. The hobby is one, but so is whether you have any DWI's, money problems, your family members, drinking, substance abuse, prescription meds, who you associate with and any other little quirks or foibles you have. It's anything in your life that might raise a red flag.

If you are concerned, my advice is walk away. Is it really worth it?

My thoughts exactly. No clearance is worth giving up these lovely ladies.

I doubt that "hobbling" [just joking with you, Mcgregor] can affect a clearance; however, as several respondents point out, hobbying could.

You can have your security clearance pulled or be denied for having financial problems related to family members. There is no definition of what that means... i.e., I owe my brother $10.

If challenged in a particular area of the agreement, you might be able to achieve or retain a clearance if you can prove you've had counseling to change your behavior or that the circumstances do not cast doubt on your trustworthiness, judgment, or willingness to comply with regulations.

Joking again... But, perhaps all your reviews include "CS" (counseling sessions) as one of the activities to protect yourself.

I've been interviewd about a half dozen times during background checks on friends of mine. The FBI guy always asked: ``Does X have any problem with promiscuity that you know about?'' Of course, I doubt anyone would say yes, but they do care about that.
