cptjohnstone--that's a purported exchange between WLSC and Lady Astor, so it's not actually a book quote (although funny as hell, and profound in its own way.)
My own is from Vonnegut's Slaughter-House 5: "So it goes." Of course, what could be more trite, but used in context, with the proper tone of . . . .(you fill in the blank) and it gains depth.
