The Alaskan island giveaway??
The below is an email I received. Anyone know anything else about this?
This is what our beloved president Obama has done in 2012 for America so far
>>> this year. This was just sent to me, and got very little press to keep it
>>> unknown from the American public. Please read the following to see what is
>>> happening. Why is he getting away with all of this?
>>>
>>> Is there a "REST OF THE STORY"?
>>>
>>> This article on Feb. 16, 2012 appears in very few places. Apparently, the
>>> regular "professional reporters" consider Obama giving away islands
>>> belonging to Alaska and part of the United States as no big deal. Obama is
>>> giving these islands to Russia for free, no cost, $zero money or any other
>>> consideration. Guess what? The state legislature in Alaska (still one of our
>>> 50 states) voted several times in opposition to THE GIVEAWAY! The islands
>>> have billions of barrels of OIL and Obama could let oil companies lease
>>> parts of the islands and start drilling for MORE OIL!! Should you suspect
>>> Obama was trying to sneak this by...? Why??
>>>
>>> <http://worldnetdaily.com/%3e; WorldNetDaily.com < <http://worldnetdaily.com/>
>>> http://worldnetdaily.com/ . Obama's State Department is giving away seven
>>> strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians. Yes, to the Putin
>>> regime in the Kremlin. The seven islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea
>>> include one the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are
>>> also to get the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabed's
>>> surrounding the islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of
>>> barrels of oil are at stake.
>>>
>>> The State Department has undertaken the giveaway in the guise of a maritime
>>> boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia.Astoundingly, our federal
>>> government itself drew the line to put these seven Alaskan islands on the
>>> Russian side. But as an executive agreement, it could be reversed with the
>>> stroke of a pen by Pres. Obama or Sec. Clinton. The agreement was negotiated
>>> in total secrecy! The State of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the
>>> negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is
>>> despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition
>>> - but the State Department doesn't seem to care.
>>>
>>> The imperiled Arctic Ocean islands include Wrangel, Bennett, Jeannette and
>>> Henrietta. Wrangel became American in 1881 with the landing of the U.S.
>>> Revenue Marine ship Thomas Corwin. The landing party included the famed
>>> naturalist John Muir. It is 3,000 square miles in size.
>>>
>>> Northwest of Wrangel are the DeLong Islands, named for George Washington
>>> DeLong, the captain of USS Jeannette. Also in 1881, he discovered and
>>> claimed these three islands for the United States. He named them for the
>>> voyage co-sponsor, New York Citynewspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett.
>>> The ship's crew received a hero's welcome back in Washington, and Congress
>>> awarded them gold medals.
>>>
>>> In the Bering Sea at the far west end of the Aleutian chains are Copper
>>> Island, Sea Lion Rock and Sea Otter Rock. They were ceded to the U.S.in
>>> Seward's 1867 treaty with Russia.
>>>
>>> Now is the time for the Obama administration to stand up for U.S. and
>>> Alaskan rights and invaluable resources. The State Department's maritime
>>> agreement is a loser - it gives us nothing in return for giving up Alaska's
>>> sovereign territory and invaluable resources. We won the Cold War and should
>>> start acting like it. Also see Link 1,2 below

You are welcome. As with most threads it is meandering, attack and parry. In essence, what you posted is basically true.

This is like France claiming Galveston because LaSalle saw it.
Kayla, as Big Louie points out, this is a non issue that has been left alone for years until some righties wanted to make a big deal over it. Take 2 minutes and look at the map and then go back to blow drying your brain or whatever you had been doing!
It's like NO TEACH making a post about a book that s he say Obama wrote but that even the publisher says was abandoned and the publicist admits making an error about the blurb he wrote about Obama!
You guys fly by the seat of someone else's pants most of the time and it is riot reading the crap you actually decide to post!

Perhaps you didn't notice, BigLouse, geographic position isn't at issue. What is at issue, BigLouse, is an arbitrary, bureaucratic line drawn on a map handing over territory that Alaskans claim belongs to the sovereign state of Alaska. Even the FactCheck.org site is ambiguous about Alaska's claim to the islands when it concludes by saying: ". . . it is simply false to claim that Obama is 'giving away' islands to which no U.S. president has asserted a claim for more than 85 years . . ." You will notice, BigLouse, how 85 years does not cover the span of years since Seward's negotiated purchase of Alaska in 1867 or even the period since 1881 when "a U.S. landing party from the USRC Corwin landed on Wrangel Island on August 12, 1881, and claimed the island for the United States naming it, 'New Columbia'. . . . According to some US individuals, including the group State Department Watch, eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel Island, are claimed by the United States. . . The USSR/USA Maritime Boundary Treaty, which has yet to be approved by the Russian Duma, does not specifically address the status of these islands nor the maritime boundaries associated with them." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrangel_Island

Yup, you jackass liberals are an ignorant lot. You are too ignorant to recognize that Joe Miller IS an Alaskan and that his state has a vested interest in keeping this issue on the front burner since it obviously means lost revenue to the state and its citizens if this territory is officially ceded to the Russians.

To say it is "lost revenue" would strongly indicate that the "state and its citizens" has been receiving "revenue" from "this territory" previously.
Are there any financial records indicating that the "state and its citizens" has previously received "revenue" from "this territory?"

Not necessarily. Having untapped oil reserves is like having money in the bank: it's not being used, it appreciates in value over time and then, when you want it, you take it out and use it. Miller also addresses fishing rights.

I believe ekim008 had a magnificen idea! Let's build the former Alaskan Governor a Quitter's Mansion on the island and give the whole damn thing to Russia for nothing. Hell, I would not be opposed to paying Russia to take Governor Quitter off of our hands! That would truly be a win/win situation for both countries!
Now that we have that problem solved, what do you guys want to bitch and moan about next?

You are confused, BigTicks. There's no bitching here. It has always been a pleasant task to point out the foibles and mental paucity so common among you Kool Aid drinking Dims. How will you ever learn without instruction?
