So, I just started drinking wine for the first time in like nine years, back when I was 21-22 and thought I was a classy smart ass. Then, I started in on whiskey, and beer to be social. But, now I'm back to wine. And I forgot whatever little I knew about it.

What I do know is I like a slightly dry red. Cabs mostly.

What suggestions do you have in the following categories:

• Table wines for around $8.
• Better wines and vintage years around $14-$24
• Then the 'I Don't Give a Fuck' it's an occasion level.

Think about Malbecs . . . I think you'll find they make a great wine for a variety of meals plust a very good stand-along.

On the 'I don't give a fuck' level - I'm sitting here looking at a bottle of wine I recently got given by a client; Caymus Vineyards 2009 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.

The receipt for it was in the bag it came in - $150 - and given the price and the lovely wine he ordered at dinner (don't remember the name of that one), I'm expecting it to taste sensational when I share it with friends later today.

$8.00 bottle - YellowTail, not bad for cheap wine
$14 - $24 Robert Mondavi Reserve, a second choice may be Woodbridge also by Robert Mondavi

Not a Cab, but my personal favorite is LeCrema Chardonnay. It's about $20.

Bogle makes a great wine & they make everything. They are around $10 a bottle. I like their Petite Syrah & Chardonnay.

All these that I mentioned can be found at Trader Joes, Target, Walmart, & Whole Foods.

The Caymus was sensational by the way, much enjoyed by myself and friends on Thanksgiving Day. Reason to be thankful - great clients (with a great taste in wine...).

Quintessa and Cakebread for the upper brands, Kendall Jackson, J, and Sebastiani for low to mid range. All make fab pinots and whites. I got some great wines from the Biltmore Estate years ago, and need to go back.

For a special occasion, a well-aged Amarone, properly decanted, with a chunk of parmesan Reggiano, or with braised wild boar if you are into game.
