Smile What comes to mind for you when you hear...

Last night as I drifted off to sleep this words popped into my head...
Strength
courage
determination
we all face adversity and in my opinion these events usually and hopefully bring out these qualities in us and make us a stronger person and more importantly a BETTER and HAPPIER person. When I see this words there are many things or people who come to mind. I am about to embark on a three day trip of relaxation and fun with a gentleman who was send overseas for 4 months and than after being home less than two weeks had to go back for another month. During this time we maintained email contact and he told me my emails along with those of his friends and family helped him survive. Now he is home and is flying in and taking me away for a few days telling me "O owe you (meaning me) a vacation)..really?? you risked your life for our country and you think you owe me??? WOW..anyway back on topic I would be interested in hearing what or who comes to mind with these words or other terms you can come up....

Irish, since the better part of my life has aready passed, these terms probably mean different things to me than someone who still has the better part of their life ahead of them.

I try to maintain the strength that is required to meet the responsibilities of Life, (they never end), the courage to accept the fact that I can no longer do what I did years before, but tempered with the determination to do the best I can regardless of the restrictions placed on me by the sands of time.

Always remember, one of the basic requirements when starting any great endevour is to first get out of bed.

I hear these words a lot. I am part of an honor guard that escorts and supports military funerals, especially KIA funerals. I am moved every time. I understand where you are coming from about being owed. I am always humbled when a new widow throws her arms around my neck and thanks me for my support. Or when a kid, who just lost his father, hurries over to shake my hand and thank me when I was trying to leave quietly after the service. I always go to support them and they end up supporting me. It's indescribable. God Bless America!

A gentleman I saw who was married for 65 years had recently lost his wife. He was 85 plus years old but let me tell you, the guy was a military academy graduate and still stood ramrod straight. ( amazingly, his other rod stood up straight too LOL) Anyways he and I saw each other as client and provider but we also became friends. I would go and buy dinner and bring it over, clean his house, watch tv with him. He still wore his wedding ring and one day he just leaned over and said " I think _____ ( his wife) wouldn't mind you being here...seeing as how much you've helped me to get over some of this loneliness I've been feeling...." You know? Shit, that made tears come to my eyes. I can't imagine losing someone you've been with for 65 years!! That's like a half of yourself being torn away.

Just so the guys can understand.... it’s like losing the boys to testicular cancer!

Just to examine the math a little: does that mean that losing someone you've only been half with for twenty years is like having a tenth of yourself torn away?

Well, I lost my Wife to cancer over 13 years ago, just shy of 30 years of marriage. I doubt another 30 years could have made the hurt any more.

One reason I refuse to enter into any type of serious civilian relationship is I don't think I could take that type of hurt again.

But life does go on.
