Others still stand by their original claims or at least I've not heard of further recanted claims. Correct me if I'm wrong.
You'll have to excuse my skepticism on this but I don't have any faith in the idea that the Chinese will cooperate with us on finding the origin of this regardless of what we say or how, especially if they had any sort of culpability. Do you really?

I'm also skeptical that doing this type of research actually does make us safer. So was the Obama administration. So are the 3.7 mil who died.

A bunch of clowns arguing about this on a hooker board isn't going to change anyone's mind about the issue. We'll have to leave that to science and it's practitioners. I agree if it escaped from a lab that was one royal fuckup. I was thinking, perhaps naively, that if Chinese viral research labs had the same safety protocols that we have in the US, this wouldn’t have happened, IF it leaked from the Wuhan lab. And so if we were able to bring them up to our standards it would be a good thing. Same for providing input to how this happened. If you established it was transmitted to humans from a wet market or a bat cave, maybe you can put pressure on China and other countries to shut down wet markets or make people wear protective gear when they enter caves. There are people here in Texas who visit bat caves with nothing more than a hard hat, without even masks.

The Wuhan lab's history of safety protocol violations was discussed over a year ago. The people who discussed it were deemed "conspiracy theorists". Senator Cotton discussed intel reports that suggested the virus originated at the Wuhan lab. Again, "conspiracy theorists." Chinese scientists who worked at the lab basically admitted that the virus came from it. Again, "conspiracy theorists."

There is no "bringing them up to our standards" and I don't even know what "our standards" are. You are worse than naïve.

There are multiple problems. The big one is any enforcement and correction of the problem isn't going to happen. The media is going to yell "TRUMP" and "CONSPIRACY THEORISTS" and along with the ChicomDemocratic media complex shout down any disinters and embrace the WHO, UN, "anonymous sources" or other corrupt US bureaucracies that distract from Chinese guilt.
