Fox ratings tumble in Tucker Carlson slot after his firing

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/f...224537060.html

DAVID BAUDER
Thu, April 27, 2023 at 5:45 PM CDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Fox News viewers are reacting to Tucker Carlson's firing by abandoning the network in his old time slot — at least temporarily.

Fox drew 1.33 million viewers for substitute host Brian Kilmeade in the 8 p.m. Eastern hour on Wednesday night, putting the network second to MSNBC's Chris Hayes in a competition Carlson used to dominate, the Nielsen company said.

That's down 56% from the 3.05 million viewers Carlson reached last Wednesday, Nielsen said. For all of 2022, Carlson averaged 3.03 million viewers, second only to Fox's “The Five” as the most popular program on cable television.

Carlson offered his own alternative to Kilmeade on Wednesday, posting a two-minute monologue on Twitter at 8 p.m. By Thursday afternoon, that video had been viewed 62.7 million times, according to Twitter.

76 million by today

Kilmeade had 1.7 million viewers on Tuesday and 2.59 million on Monday, when he told people who hadn't already heard the news that Carlson would no longer be there.

Tucker Carlson

Carlson had 2.65 million viewers on Friday for what he didn't know at the time would be his last show on Fox. He was fired on Monday with no explanation given publicly, although there are no shortage of theories — including a former employee's lawsuit that cited a toxic work atmosphere at his show, offensive statements by Carlson that came out as part of the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit against Fox and his embrace of political conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6 insurrection.

The ratings slump echoes what happened at Fox following the 2020 election, when many viewers angered by the network's crucial election night declaration that Joe Biden had won Arizona followed then-President Donald Trump's advice to seek alternatives. That caused tremendous angst behind the scenes at Fox, which was illustrated in documents released as part of the Dominion case.

Asked for comment, Fox responded with a statement noting that Fox has been cable news' most-watched network for 21 years with its team “trusted more by viewers than any other news source.”

In the wake of Carlson's firing, viewing at the conservative network Newsmax has shot up for Eric Bolling, who hosts a show in the same 8 p.m. Eastern slot.

For example, Bolling had 510,000 viewers Wednesday night, compared to 168,000 on Wednesday a week ago, Nielsen said. On Tuesday, Bolling had 562,000 viewers, up from 122,000 the same day a week earlier.

The challenge for Newsmax will be making it last. Fox surged again following Biden's inauguration as president, and Newsmax couldn't keep up the momentum.

Carlson wasn't fired at FOX. he's still under contract.

who says so? apparently Carlson himself. this shouldn't be a surprise. unless Carlson resigns, his contract still binds him to FOX.

there will be an exit eventually but for now he's just not on air for FOX.

and still getting paid.

Fox’s firing of the most-watched host on cable news, Tucker Carlson, is still roiling Leftists and patriots alike, but now Carlson himself has said that it didn’t actually happen at all. In a text message to the news analysis site 19FortyFive, Carlson said flatly: “I’m still employed by Fox.” This doesn’t mean, however, that all is forgiven and that his show will be back on the air Monday. On the contrary, it could hinder Carlson’s plans to take his truth-telling elsewhere.

In his message to 19FortyFive, Carlson was actually confirming what another former Fox host, Megyn Kelly, revealed on Thursday: “I want to, I think, break some news for you. Tucker Carlson hasn’t actually been fired. He’s still an employee of the Fox News Channel. What happened was, Suzanne Scott called him, she’s the CEO, on Monday, morning, and said, um, he was not going to be allowed to do any more shows, and that he had been kicked out of his company email, and now they’re going to have to negotiate an exit. Um, some reporting to me, uh, suggests that she said it’s going to be an amicable parting. Right? Isn’t it?” That would be nice, but Scott’s own behavior, if Kelly’s report is accurate, makes it more unlikely.

The Morning Briefing: Tucker Carlson's Haters Are Going to Be Disappointed

https://pjmedia.com/columns/stephen-...inted-n1690738

By Stephen Kruiser 7:47 AM on April 27, 2023

One of the more amusing aspects of Tucker Carlson’s unceremonious departure from Fox News is the fact that all of his leftist haters think he’ll be fading away. There has also been a lot of consternation along the same lines expressed by many of his fans. Everyone who has talked to me about it brings up Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly as examples of what they are worried about. The FNC audiences that they had when each left the network didn’t really follow them en masse.

I honestly think that the Carlson situation is different. Tucker — not Sean Hannity — has been the face of Fox News as the network has moved to the middle on a lot of things. The audience is his and not the network’s.

Matt wrote yesterday about why Carlson may have been given the boot by FNC:
Though he hasn’t said anything about this in public, Carlson believes that the network is on the verge of being sold by the Murdoch family.

“Carlson has told people he doesn’t know why he was terminated. According to the source, [Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott] refused to tell him how the decision was made; she only said that it was made ‘from above.’ Carlson has told people he believes his controversial show is being taken off the air because the Murdoch children intend to sell Fox News at some point,” Vanity Fair reports.
If that’s true, there’s a real possibility that Fox News won’t be Fox News anymore, at least not the version of it that conservatives used to watch. It’s been changing for years and Carlson has been the one constant that was reminiscent of the old FNC. He was probably going to be due for a change of scenery soon anyway.

Carlson’s star has risen so much in recent years that he can’t be canceled, not even by the once-mighty Fox News. I’ve been reassuring people since Monday that I don’t even think this is a hiccup for him.

Kurt Schlichter’s latest column at Townhall expresses the same thing in that very Schlichterian way:
Tucker Carlson is neither down nor out; he is going to come back bigger and badder than ever. All you goofy virgins who love “Star Wars” will recall that when Darth Vader sliced Obi-Wan Kenobi in two – or at least his moth-eaten cloak – Ben stopped existing in this dimension and became a superbeing who popped in for a chat whenever Luke was in trouble. Tucker’s pretty much going to do that for the movement. Though Tucker may have been tossed off his perch at Fox (or jumped – we will eventually get the details on how this denouement went down), he will land on his feet and crush the libs beneath his preppy Topsiders.
The media landscape has changed so much in just the last few years that Carslon will be writing his own ticket rather easily. People are used to paying for content à la carte now. That wasn’t the case even five years ago.

As Schlichter mentions, Tucker also has experience launching his own media company, which he did with The Daily Caller. Throwing together some money people for a new venture won’t be difficult for him.

My personal opinion — and this is merely a hunch — is that Carlson might have some payback on his mind, so he’ll be more motivated than ever before.

Whatever he does, he’ll have fun doing it. That’s what I have always liked about him. He’s serious when he needs to be but is always good for a laugh, too. He’s not pinched and dour like so many conservative television personalities. He clearly enjoys his job and isn’t afraid to be goofy once in a while. I’m greatly looking forward to watching the lefty meltdown when Tucker Carlson proves that he’s bigger than Fox News.

Please consider subscribing to the Morning Briefing here. It’s free but it helps keep me off the streets AND supports conservative media.

Fucker Carlson isn't going away. He just won't have the same enormous platform he had to spew his bullshit. I don't know what Bill O'Reilly is doing (don't even care enough to google it) but Fucker C. will probably end up with a similar gig.

Tucker is some ways a successor to Rush Limbaugh.

he has what it takes to eclipse Rush as the number one conservative media personality. That will take time, he still young.
