It is about choices. I am sure that some people do not choose to be poor but they do make the choices that either put them there or keep them there.
I was poor, I know what it means to dumpster dive, I know what it means to waak the street and hustle bottles for the deposit, I know what it means to have to go to the public clinic, I know what it means to be lucky enough to have enough money for some rice and beans. I know what it means to walk to and from school because at the time the bus cost 15 cents. I know what it means to wear handmade clothes and clothes from other families. I have been there and done that. I know what it is like to live in Houston with no air conditioning because we did not have the money not only for it but to pay for the electricity. I know what it is like to get a meal from a church and have it be the best I had that week.
Other than the public clinic we did it without ever taking a hand out from the government.
I found ways to make money by applying myself and not fucking off and bitching about how bad it was. Yes it was hard work, I cut yards, I cut whole lots, I hustled bottle deposit, I scrounged scrap metal, I had a paper route, and I went to school and did my work so I could learn how to make life better for myself rather than wallowing in pity because there were others that were better off than myself.
Oh and Hobby Lobby is a great company , Like Chick Fil A they close on Sundays so that their employees can have time to spend with their families and forgo the profits that they could make.

T2D - Sport, it's not about you. Obviously you can take care of yourself and have the wherewithal to rise above your beginnings. But, I know many who grew up like you and did all of the things you relate who either had events step in or just didn't have what it took to take them higher than a $40K+/- slot in the lower middle - after hitting it hard for 20 years.
It boils down to how one looks at life, I suppose. Either the wanton hordes are at the gate waiting to rush in and take all of your hard earned money, preferably without breaking a sweat, or people deserve a certain degree of respect for doing what they can with what they have. If you are all that, hoss, you wouldn't have to disparage others. You may now quit making your case for becoming King of the Universe - and a rather unseemly and quite pathetic case it is.

Yes, there are people like T2D, who ought to be very proud. There are others who can't seem to get a break. My only point is that it is not the federal government's job to guarantee outcomes. States can do so, or charities. I have participated in many charities for the poor and disabled. We are not to turn a blind eye to the unfortunate, but we also ought not demand government do for them what we can do for them.

It is not the job of the federal government to take care of those that give up.
It is not the job of the federal government to assist those that are trying or not trying.
Look up the word charity.
Charity is not the responsibility of the federal government.
Now take a look at the debt. It is not hard to figure out how we got here.

COF, your "guaranteed outcome" ain't exactly the stuff dreams or made of. It's a very bare bones existance, regardless of the occasional "welfare Cadillac" urban legend, which, by the way, proves the rule. It's cheaper than prison on the taxpayer, too.
T2D, look up how well "charity" used to work throughout history (HINT: not worth a sh*t). The biggest charitable organizations used to be churches but since membership and attendance is off almost 50% from the heyday of the '40s and '50s and, this could be important to a bunch of ho's and mongers, their "good will" often comes with additional strings or, lawdy, lawdy lawdy, they may not become so charitable - hmmmmm - makes you want to sign up for that.
Both of you are advocating passing the buck to a voluntary system that never worked well, if at all, that is seriously inefficient at its very best. It is now, and always has been, a choice between letting a certain amount of the populace twist in the wind or not. AND, here's the best part, these alleged "savings" are now and have always been a very small part of what has caused the current national debt. Oops!
You guys are merely making an emotional argument that it way too easy to pick apart, due primarily to its emotional component. But, like I have said before, it feels good to you. However, I have ways of feeling better myself that aren't dependant on people worshippng the ground I choose to walk on. A lot easier for me and on others.

Oh I have no emotion about it at all.
I just like seeing all the liberals come out and spew their socialistic bullish and utopian crap. Really and truthfully I dont give a crap about the minimum wage I just wanted to see a bunch of whiney assed liberals stumbling all over themselves to defend it.
I take great pleasure in watching you people defend the indefensible and promote more and bigger government. your compassion for the vulnerable and the children just brings me to tears.
I really find it amusing that after all these years of social programs that the same people are still in the same condition they have always been in. How may more peop0le are on food stamps now than say 10 years ago.
Looks like your programs are insuring you will always have your voting base with your empty promises and just enough to keep them calm and not rising up and overt]throwing your system of perpetual servitude.
I bet you live in an all whit neighborhood too. Not in the barrio like some of us.
You see you have no proof that your system works any better than no system at all. If it worked so well why has it gotten worse. Oh yeah its Bush's fault. So was it Clinton;s fault before that , and the other Bush, and then Carter or was it Johnson tell me whose fault is it really? Oh I know the programs just havent been big enough, the taxes not high enough, the government not large enough, the largess not large enough, and yada yada yada......

You find that amusing?
And your point, in and of itself, means a whole lot of not what you want to think it means.

You're right, RaggedyAndy. Only the government can truly help anyone. Thank god we have our government deciding who is needy and who is not. We poor ignorant citizens are so heartless, that unless the government takes our money by force, or borrows it from China, the poor and helpless would forever do without. God bless our government! Oops, can't say that, there might be a down and out atheist that would offend. Well, anyway, government knows best, so let's all support our government, regardless of what it does. That's the American way.
